Gunnair Gunnair: 2Cdo 2Cdo: raydan raydan: Being a good or great shot only helps you so much in a stessful situation where you've got an armed, moving suspect in an urban setting shooting back at you.
No stress at the gun range and no consequence for your actions... you can go through the entire shoot in a Zen-like state. Then pat yourself on the back for being so good.
As for me, I'd still rather see the police shooting back at the bad guys than a bunch of armed civilians. People here saying that they would have been better than the police are full of crap. As a shooter, who is an excellent shot on the range, I admit that when there is someone shooting back I am far from an excellent shot. Honesty. + 5 I could have added that I dropped to just a very good shot when being shot at versus an excellent shot!

I'm a n excellent shot as well, but I doubt I'd be that hot if someone shot back. Mind, unlike the ground pounders, someone shooting us would either be inside a ship during a boarding or it's with something a lot larger over the horizon.

Pulled the pin last March and retired completely and am just now coming to grips that my odds of dying in some foreign shithole have decreased to almost 0%! Too much traveling to ever lower it to zero!

One of the arguments here is that all gun owners are excellent shots that would have no problems taking down the shooter. The problem with that argument is that the shooter is also a gun owner.

Don't go to Mexico! Mexico isn't all bad - I hit Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta with the family last Christmas and it was pretty safe. No doubt more so because of the trucks full of heavily armed troops driving around each town. I think the touristy areas are pretty safe unless you engage in dangerous behaviour (excess drinking, looking for hookers/drugs, etc). I hate to engage in generalizations or stereotypes, but I think most people who go looking for trouble in Mexico find it, while those that just want to explore and have fun are fairly safe. The Mexican government and its functionaries might be corrupt as hell, but they know who butters their bread...

No doubt more so because of the trucks full of heavily armed troops driving around each town. Wow. Didn't know they'd deployed troops in those two spots. That sucks. PV and Cabo have mostly avoided the drama in the other cities and I agree that they're reportedly safe. I'm glad you had a good time, too! bootlegga bootlegga: I think the touristy areas are pretty safe unless you engage in dangerous behaviour (excess drinking, looking for hookers/drugs, etc). The Mexican government and its functionaries might be corrupt as hell, but they know who butters their bread... Again, you're mostly spot on. The exceptions occur when you wander away from the cocoon of relative safety around the tourist spots. It is not at all uncommon anymore for the cartels to be running roadblocks on major highways and robbing people (and etc.) and then in the south of Mexico it's not unusual for the police or the army to do the same thing.

Holy shit, things have sure changed since I cycled down there years ago if they need troops there now. The presence of the military to keep civil order isn't something that makes me feel safe or want to visit that area. Next up, a tour of Watts i in 1965 and Detroit in 1967. Look Martha, they got the National Guard out, this must be a nice place to visit.
