Couldn't you have done all that as a Deck Officer? On the Yukon, their head, Lt.Hupe did all that Bos'n shit when he had a chance. I remember them carrying/pouring him back from the bar, as he hung more with his department than the other officers...except the stokers. When I was an OSUT we shared a mess(2) with the acting subbies(4 Squadron). For awhile we used to go drinking together quite frequently until the XO gave us a speech on fraternizing.

Gunnair Gunnair:
It's an unfortunate delusion of the military that they often believe it's only the officer that can offer something to affect change. Myself and some other NCOs disagree, so we stick it out.

I think it's something each nation's OFFICERS tell themselves (so as to make themselves feel useful and needed I guess), but everyone who knows anything about the military knows that its the NCOs that are the backbone of any fighting force. Officers only tell you what hill to take or which to ship to sink, but it's usually the NCOS who really figure out how to do the task at hand.

I like to think of officers as big picture people, looking at the whole mess from on high, while NCOs are the fine detail guys, looking at the problem up close and personal.
