Why break tradition for no positive given reason.

While true and I have no problems with it...
...traditions DO disappear over time.

You just need to look at traditions that families here had 20-50-100 years ago that are no more.
The Monarchy will disappear eventually... in Australia, Canada, probably even in the UK.

Maybe your right.

If we had a referendum today, I think the vote would be in favour of retaining the monarchy (just keep Quebec out of the equation).

This was on the news. Somebody asked about the monarchy in Canada and about Prince Charles on Canadian money. His reaction was hilarious. He's like, 'uhhhh no I don't think so'.

Wow this thread went south fast. Gunnair and Sheperdsdog, raging at Kenmore for being both French Canadian and a republican is, like Kenmore said, the exact type of behaviour that fuels separatism. On the other hand, Kenmore, you aren't exactly quelling the anti-Quebec sentiment by calling Western Canadians delusional. Internet tough guys all around it seems, so much for a decent debate on the monarchy.

As for the actual monarchy vs republic question, if Canada were to be a republic all that really needs to be done is make the Governor General an elected position. That being said, the entire Canadian system is based on the idea that everything done is done in the name of a higher authority than the common man, that being the monarch who is the human manifestation of the state itself. How you'd get the same kind of authority in a republic is beyond me. I do like that idea that someone mentioned early about Australia having it's own separate monarchy, I think that could be an option for Canada. There are still heirs to the Bourbon throne kicking around, maybe we can convince one to marry a Windsor and set up our own royal family. Just a suggestion at any rate.

The PM of Australia reads MY posts! Exactly what I've been saying for a decade.
We can elect the GG and assign not one additional power to the position and confirm that we will remain supportive members of the Commonwealth.

Actually, it's for being a whiney seperatist. And I wouldn't take him to task much for being a seperatist if he wasn't one of those entitled whiney seperatists...

We have a better shot at becoming a republic before we get our own monarch. The problem isn't about wanting to sever ties with the royal family, its about changing the Constitution. Every province is going to try and get something put in that benefits them and with every province able to veto any changes to the constitution now they will simply veto till they get their way. That is the reason we haven't been able to go to an elected Senate.

The provinces don't have vetos, but a couple provinces opposed would effectively be a veto.
But you have a point I want to add my twist to: it would be worth it just to see the BQ and the PQ all screaming to KEEP the Monarchy just to be fucking contrary.

IIRC, Quebec hasn't signed the Constitution, so they won't get a say.

thats what's wrong with Canadian politics in general, the opposition opposes for the sake of opposing, no matter what Canadians vote on or want.

In the case of an amendment related to the Office of the Queen, the number of senators, the use of either official language (subject to section 43), the amending formula, or the composition of the Supreme Court, the amendment must be adopted by unanimous consent of all the provinces in accordance with section 41.
