Pipes, pipes, pipes, IMO a strobe head light will prevent more crashes than pipes will, but you don’t see many bikes with them. Could it be that you look like your riding scared and kind of a wuss if you have one?

They are illegal.

Once again gents, lets differentiate between seeing and hearing.

Too many times cagers cry " i didnt see him "

Headlamps: 4.05

(8) A motorcycle may be equipped with modulating headlamps if the headlamps comply with section 5.6 of the Technical Standards Document No. 108, Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (Canada).

[en. B.C. Reg. 476/98, s. 2.

http://www.bclaws.ca/EPLibraries/bclaws ... ection4.05

They are legal, what I'm trying to point out is that bikers want to be a safe as they can, but they won't install anything that would tarnish the biker image.

I've never heard anybody say, " I didn't hear them"

Oh I thought you were talking about something else.
'strobe' for me is on and off.

The top 5 links for modulating headlights all discuss that it is
legal, and if you get a ticket for it you should go to court and fight
so as to educate law enforcement.

Sorry, not my job....

I figure I would last about 10 minutes over here with one of those,
before someone took a run at me, or the cops would stop me for that.

I had a xenon light fitted on my bike, took it off cause even I could
see that was "too much"

Thanks for the validation ;)

when you mentioned strobe, I was thinking of something that you would find on the top of a police car.

I like strobe headlamps, I have 2 of them on my bicycle. they are great for getting comments from drivers like "that light is annoying!"

The "I didn't see them" has nothing to do with having a light (or more than one) on or not. It all has to do with the lack of interest by the car-drivers.
Most motorcycles I see have their headlights set so high, they blind me.

Did't see them? Then freaking pay attention when you're driving.

And as this thread dies I'll end my participation with a video from yesterday in Red Deer.

That damn woman should of known the biker was going to open it up and pass, gezzz don't you know you have to pay attention to idiots like that. And why the hell didn't she hear him.

Sitting on my deck I can't hear the QE2 from my place, but I can hear one of those ricers going pass at what sounds like about 200km +.

I sure wish society would change away from if I don't want it you can't have it attitude. Everyday citizens are helping take away the very rights our fathers and grand fathers fought wars for. At every turn we try to erode someones free will by trying to impose our own. In every forum or topic it always comes down to the same thing.
There is never discussion or solutions. Industry is becoming the same way. More rules more regulations less productivity brought on by inept people doing jobs they were never cut out for.
I have enjoyed bikes for yrs and never once did I have a neighbor complain about noise from one of my bar hoppers. There is a time and a place for making noise no matter what the noise maker is.

Absolutely. But apparently, not everybody understands common courtesy.

I need open pipes, or I just can't be freeeeeeeee! The right of your open pipes stops at my eardrums. Doubt if your fathers or forefathers fought wars so you could make an asshole of yourself. How to trivialize their sacrifices.

Discussion of solutions? Mufflers.

Apparently you couldn't get the point if it was jammed up your ass either.

Your grandfathers and fathers did not fight for the right for a biker to be obnoxiously loud, and I am not saying you are one of those bikers. I live near a hospital, or rather, did, and it was never the wailing sirens or anything which woke me up a half dozen times a night, it was the incessant sound of bikers waking myself and a few hundred other people in the surrounding buildings up by gunning an engine on a residential street going maybe 40 kph.

Just because your ancestors fought for your right does not mean they fought for your right to impinge on other people's rights. I have a right to a healthy night of sleep. I have a right to good hearing and good health as a result. I have a right to focus when I am working so I can make an income. I have a right to listen to my TV or music without it being blasted out by someone cutting a bunch of holes into their muffler of their vehicle. I respect their rights for having a bike, but I'd hope they'd respect my rights in turn, and that inability to respect the rights of others is why we’re seeing this law coming into force. Our society is built on rights of each and everyone one of us – as long as they do not trod on the rights of others.

If you aren't making noise, you are fine. Hell, I'm fine with a moderate amount. But a lot of people are making a crazy amount of noise. I used to live in two parts of Edmonton which were crazy with the noise of these things, and I can sympathize with hundreds of neighbours about it -- people in Garneau, White Ave, around the university, and in the north east, have been complaining for years. The reason I'm down in Calgary (I could have moved somewhere quiet in Edmonton too) right now is so that I can get sleep, since it was becoming a medial issue not being able to get a full night's rest due to loud vehicles. I could sleep through the chimes of the LRT and it passing by right outside my window, and incessant sirens at both spots I lived, but neither were the reason I was awake in the middle of the night all the time.

I think the big thing to remember is that no sound amount has been set yet, Richard. You could be absolutely within limits. But when something is loud enough that it drowns out what it supposed to be loud for our safety, it does make other citizens think. If bikers got together they could probably propose an alternative – this is not set in stone yet, I’d think. But I'd prefer all people tone down the loud vehicles a bit.

In Calgary, I'm not exclusively overwhelmed by the sound of motorcycles. There are way too many trucks and ricers out there to notice the Harleys. Therefore, I tend to believe that any animosity towards Harleys is outright ignorance and prejudice.

I wasn't aware the law was specifically against Harleys. I mean, you're absolutely right, this is just prejudice to specifically target one brand of motorcycle. This law must not stand!

The article didn't mention a brand of motorcycle once, as far as I can tell.
