$1:
Oil rose above $45 a barrel on Wednesday as reduced production in Canada's oil sands region due to a wildfire pushed aside concern about excess global supplies and expectations of rising U.S. crude inventories.
Quite a fire that can raise oil prices. Of course as Alberta comes on line again, the prices will drop, just as they could use the money to help rebuild.

It's very rare I agree with everything you say in a post. This is one of those times. I was thinking along those lines as I read the previous comments. Right when they get the pumps working again the price will drop and make it even harder to rebuild rapidly.

Nice stuff on fire breaks(early on in the postings) also. I see fire breaks here in Texas and think it's not wide enough.

Every year.

Usually a little later on in the year.

With the current confusion and dispersion, we won't know if everybody made it out for quite a while. :(

Yes, and no. Fires aren't uncommon, and the fires are normally larger. But not this early, and not this intense. And the fires are usually in uninhabited places.

The winter was very dry, and there has been essentially zero rain this spring. Everything it bone dry, and the humidity in the air is very very low, adding to the fire intensity. Then you add a 50 - 60km/h wind in the mix, and the city turned into a blast furnace. :(

I'm hearing on the radio that large sections of the south of the city are gone. :( Thousands are homeless and estimates hundreds of businesses and a thousand homes are gone.

It will get worse as the day heats up, the humidity drops and the winds pick up. :(

We haven't heard as much about it, but apparently BC is battling 48 fires of it's own. I know for a while they were threatening northern cities. Ft St John? Ontario, however is sending 100 firefighters. While Alberta could sure use the help, there can be problems with logistics in housing and deploying all the firefighters needed. I know the military has offered to help with that.
