Brock, if you really want to be a stickler, the Brits never burnt down the White House either.

They burnt down the Executive Mansion.

I notice a tendency of Commonwealth countries to connect, and disconnect to the British Empire at will as to suit their goals. If the British Empire is kicking ass and taking names, everyone wants a piece of the action. All it takes is one of their countrymen to be involved in any capacity [ cook,butler,valet,soldier,airmen,interpreter.etc.] and they are all in! Hey that was us! We were there! Everyone wants to share in the success of the British Empire. If the British get their asses handed to them in a battle, they go down alone. Its like no one else was there. Let a Commonwealth county's military adventures go awry,[like a failed landing] and then its like the Commonweath country was not involved at all. Then the defeat is chalked up to arrogant British commanders needlessly sacrificing lives of Commonwealth soldiers for no apparent reason.[I am not stating that has never happened] I am mearly pointing out the old adage that: victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan.

This little disagreement reminds me of something I've often wondered... how closely does one need to be "related" to an event or group or what have you to take pride in it?

Some are saying that as Canadians we shouldn't claim ownership or pride in the war of 1812 because there was no such thing as Canada or Canadians then. Myself, I have no Canadian ancestors at all. I'm first generation. Can I take pride in Canada's accomplishments in WWI or WWII or other things that Canada has done? Am I allowed to gloat a little over the summit series, even though only one of my parents even knew what hockey was at the time?

I only put the Dannebrog there because you can only choose one flag and I assumed the Maple Leaf was implied. I was so naive back in those heady days when I first joined CKA...

As an American who also loves Canada I am colossally insulted at this xenophobic idiotic paranoid position of the US government that we need to guard ourselves at the Canadian border because somebody might be sneaking terroristic chocolate Easter eggs across the border or even a muzzie.

I can only imagine how you folks must feel, or perhaps you are so use to it that you came to expect little else from the mental lilliputians in Washington.

The paranoia and political gamesmanship that exudes from America these days is exceeded only by the friendliness and good sense that exudes from the actual Americans that one meets.

I think that at this point most Canadians have learned not to take these things personally. America has become so inward looking that most policy, foreign and otherwise, is dictated less by what's going on in reality than by what might win a few dozen votes here or there. Most politicians would rather "get" a political opponent then an Al Queda operative.

If someone can turn a fence on the border into a political advantage it'll get built, no matte how much it cost, or how little it does.

Which one are you referring to, and then I'll give you the list of responsible
British commanders who were in charge.

Canadian

So let me get this right, Mr. Obama and your Democrat friends:

Putting up a fence on the Mexican border (where it's needed) is racist, but putting up a fence on the Canadian border (where it's nearly pointless) is okay? [huh]
Shit, how am I going to get to California and work the bean fields?

They could grow nice wall climbing plants on it. Yanks, build away.
Does Cannabis climb fences?

In part, I think American overreaction to threats - not really paranoia, has come about because its role as the World's policeman. the "Pax Americana," has been thrust upon it against its will. It had no time to grow into the role as Britain did in its day.

America's continuing diplomatic failures come from this inexperience.

I think they are just protecting their borders. It's not like there is a dearth of threats against the US. Quite the contrary.

Why would we get upset about them being very proactive in self-defence? Go for it Yanks.
