$1: Of course we're strengthening your economy...by sending 10's of thousands of our workforce to your province to fill your job market. It pays to keep Atlantic Canada in the poorhouse.
Nope, you said a 'central government' that serves to strengthen ALberta and Ontario which if you took your head out your ass, you'll note both provinces are crap, like the rest of the country and the world. Tens of thousands? THat's quite a sum, especially coming from a population like Newfie land. If ALberta provided jobs and Newfie land didn't, tough, blame your premier not the government.
*shrug* No sense speaking further on this one. What is the density of the human brain anyway? The population of NL hovers around 500,000 year after year. Now you do the math. Is the birthrate keeping pace with the death rate? Not if we are a human anomoly that goes against statistics around the world. Estimates put the number of Newfoundlanders worldwide at 1 million. That does not include the half million living on the island. Yes, we are a migratory species who eventually come home to roost.

RUEZ RUEZ: mtpockets mtpockets: Ah, you've touched on the great Canadian dilemma haven't you. It helps when you have the federal government on your side. Take for example the recent developments with Abitibi in NL. They shut down the mill in Grand Falls and thought they could maintain the water and timber rights on the island. Williams took matters into his own hands and showed them a taste of reality. Did Harper stand up for NL? Of course not. It's not in his best interest. But let some multi-national try to upset the oil industry in Alberta and watch the snake come slithering forward.
Yeah, we want this man representing us on the world stage when it comes time to negotiate trade issues. Even if we stay away from the negotiations and get nothing we'll still be farther ahead than if we let him sell us down the river. Why would Harper speak up about internal provincial trade matters? IN BC multinational forest companies have shut down sawmills while retaining their timber cutting rights. People don't like it but we certainly don't cry when Harper doesn't come running in to speak up on our behalf. You guys in Newfoundland need to start taking responsibility for your own economy. It seems quite petty to take property away from a company because it shut down one aspect of it's business. I also happen to remember that the workers at that sawmill voted to not make any concessions to keep their jobs. They'd rather be on welfare then take a paycut. I hope you all aren't like that. Petty? Abitibi reneged on a 100 year old contract that ensured them unlimited water and timber rights as long as they maintained a paper mill, providing jobs which in turn generated taxes for the province. They shut down the mill and voided the contract. What kind of custodians of our natural resources would we be if we allowed this company to reap the benefits of these resource while the province gets squat? Williams did the right thing. I'd suggest you write your premier to also follow suit and preserve what's rightfully yours. And while your at it ask him to grow a pair.

mtpockets mtpockets: Williams is doing just fine my combative friend. He has struck a sweet deal with Hebron, he is pushing ahead with the Lower Churchill development and he has evoked a sense of cohesion among the populace like no premier before him, in any province. Combine that with the Hydromet smelter in Long Harbor, the growing aquaculture industry, the existing offshore oilfield development, the rich mineral industry and Newfoundland and Labrador will do just fine, thank you very much. You, on the other hand can have another beer. Great. Now maybe he can stem the flow of retards into the rest of Canada and I don't drink beer, its against my anti-Newfie religion.

Nobody wants to live in Newfoundland then I take it.

Is growing a pair going to reduce your unemployment rate from 14% to 6% like BC?

Ok Tman, quit editing your responses. You originally posted 'nice retort'. Now you want to change direction. Make up your waffling mind.

mtpockets mtpockets: Talk to me in a year when the Olympics are done and your forestry industry is in the toilet. It's in the toilet now. We've lost thousands of jobs and are still less then half your unemployment. I guess diversification is a smart thing to do. You can't rely on fish and oil for ever.
