Centre Centre:

I don't recall my Father or Mother ever hitting my sisters.

Hitting to 'teach a lesson' is not necessary or civilized.

I never had to hit my kids either as they understood why certain things had to be done.

I have repeatedly spoken out against any form of corporal punishment on this forum and been derided for it. Nowhere have I said that what he did was OK, just that I deem the sentence appropriate in light of his intent and that the girls death was unforeseeable.

I have seen vids of men slapping each other and the slapped person passes out, likely because he was hit in the temple. No permanent damage. Here, the girl did not pass out or immediately die. Dad went to another room, and when he heard a thud returned to find her bleeding from the nose. He called 911 immediately.

If the girl had not died, she could have reported dad to Social Services. They would have done an investigation if this was usual behavior for him. The likely outcome would have been that girl is left in the home, with the family having to get counselling. By the outcome it court, it seems that this was a loving home with some cultural differences in how children are to be treated, not one where abuse is severe.

He got 79 years in jail and 2 years probation. I've previously posted about 2 cases where the perpetrator meant to inflict serious harm on the victim, with death being very much foreseeable, and not getting a day in jail. That to me is an outrage. This, not so much. This man will punish himself far more than any jail sentence could.
