Interesting to see the mythology that starts to arise out of this event. All we have is sketchy reports of a covert US operation. US covert forces are not exactly famous for telling the truth. It's clearly in their interest to say that bin Laden cried like a little bitch or held babies in front of him, but likely not true. Still, some people have no filter to detect propaganda and will just eat whatever Pablum is fed to them.

As for bin Laden, he's dead. That is satisfying. Move on.

The distortion of what really happened has a lot to do with the adrenaline rush the Seals were feeling after the operation.

It’s a real Hobson’s choice.

Play by the rules or kill the bad guys without rules. Like I said, I’m conflicted on this one.

I gotta agree. Like I said with Mark Twains' words in another thread; I didn't wish him dead, I would have preferred a trial - but I'm not broken up about it either.

If they played by the rules of war, put on uniforms and met us in battle, things would be different. But they choose to use guerrilla and terror tactics to try to do us harm at the least cost to them. So we have no choice but to treat them like animals, and put them down whenever we encounter one.

It's not optimal, but it's better than doing nothing.

I'd have rather seen it done by a sniper, long shot assassination as opposed to this op, like it or not there are international laws, we in the west have tried our own soldiers for shooting unarmed enemies.

Of course we don't know nor will we ever likely know the whole scenario and how it unfolded, but just because our enemies ignore international law doesn't mean we should.

Regardless I join my voice with others in wishing him eternity in hell.

Now we should have a massive western rally and burn effigies of mohammed and Bin laden, burn Paki flags ect... and really stoop to their level.

Oh, I admit it sounds plausible: Realizing his capture is inevitable, Dr. Evil bin Laden grabs his wife and holds her in front of him, only to be summarily taken down by Chuck Norrisa Navy Seal.

Could be I suppose.

But then we have this:

$1:
JAY CARNEY, WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY: Bin Laden's wife rushed the US assaulter and was shot in the leg but not killed. Bin Laden was then shot and killed. He was not armed.

You really want to go there with Bin Laden? I can see your argument for the Taliban in Afghanistan (which of course many people can't manage to separate from Al Qaeda).

Isn't sniping him still shooting an unarmed enemy?

Yet it was the CIA who trained OBL. They were the ones skulking around and not fighting by the rules of war in their proxy war with the US.

To expect anybody to adhere to our "rules of war" is just complete BS when our side simply ignores then whenever we find them inconvenient.

Hmmm I guess we have to look at who Carney got his info from. Would it be safe to assume that someone other than those "lying special ops guys" was on hand to witness the events?

No. Its just the best example of non-uniformed people fighting a war. To expect them to follow the rules we invented for war is just plain wrong.
