I know... the Monarchy is history, pomp & ceremony, a symbol of our past and just something cool to have.
But do we really need it? Like Uwish said, it's expensive to maintain.

The monarchy is not a bad thing to keep around. I think what the Aussies need is to have their own royal family...maybe ask Prince Harry to be King. Heck, I'd be okay with Prince Harry as King of the USA - that's one kid with his head on straight and he's got a pair, too.

kenmore kenmore: Actually it was me who was attacked first by lies.. and all I said was the Queen should be Canada's last monarch as well. My opion.. then the attacks came in accusing me of not being Canadian etc.. because I have a different view. I don't believe we need the monarchy. Note I hold a British passport. I also know some Brits who feel the monarchy is redundant. So I guess for some on this site, if you don't agree with them you have no say... I say screw you! I read your horse shit daily. And I have said many times here, I put the bloc logo on here a long time ago to irritate someone who has long been banned. I have asked how to remove it but have been given no advice. I also have said that although I do not support the bloc, I do respect and like M. Duceppe. I actully spoke with him in Montréal Sunday. The bloc represents the interest of Québec in Ottawa and they do it well.. but for me I vote liberal in Québec and federally. So all you anti-Québecers who feel you are the support system for us...kick away... knock yourselves out! There is no 'feel' about it. The west supports you. Man up and admit it for once. Sadly, Quebec is sometimes feels like the thirty year old in Canada's basement that won't move out and get a job.

Not always on straight and sometimes that 'pair' can lead to stupid decisions. Careful now, Derby will muckle on to your post!

uwish uwish: I personally like the monarchy however, it is expensive to maintain the figurehead and all the pomp and ceremony attached with it. My only hope is that Canadians will ask what they want and not be influence just because we 'have to be different than those Americans'. Personally I think the monarchy has had its day but I don't think it's priced itself out of the market. How much does the British Royal family actually cost to Canada? Sweet fuck-all really. The only time we bear any costs are when we get a visit from them, and really, they are similar costs that we pay out for any state visit from an IPP type person. If they were all gone we would still have a similar GG/LG system with a presidential replacement. The links between the UK and Canada barely exist outside of history books. The only real change would be to our coins and the cap badges of the military and the cops.

Admittedly, i'm actually indifferent to the whole debate (but i do love pushing the anti-monarchist's buttons). I'm not a monarchist, nor do i see a reason to start the whole constitutional mess (and let's be honest - the average Canadian, when polled, has no idea about amending the constitutional for institutional change), but if a reasoned discussion was opened up about the future of the monarchy in Canada, i'm not opposed to finding a replacement (as long there is significant support, that support understands the process and a suitable replacement has been debated, vetted and suggested)

Oath of Citizenship - “ I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfill my duties as a Canadian citizen.[9] ”
Oath of Allegiance - “ I, [name], do Solemnly swear (affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors according to law, forever. So help me God.[3] ”
or
"I, [name], do swear (or solemnly affirm) that I will well and truly serve Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her heirs and successors according to law, in the Canadian Forces until lawfully released, that I will resist Her Majesty's enemies and cause Her Majesty's peace to be kept and maintained and that I will, in all matters pertaining to my service, faithfully discharge my duty. So help me God"
An oath is an oath, loyalty still counts for something.

An oath is truly an oath.. that can be changed and re-written. Perhaps its time we swear allegiance to Canada and to the republic for which it stands! I mean really there are far too many queens these days to swear allgiance to just one
