Richard Richard:
BartSimpson BartSimpson:
The law is against the motorcyles principally because noise is not a required element of using a motorcyle. BMW has made very quiet motorcyles for decades while Harley Davidson actually patented and trademarked the tonal qualities and volume of their motorcycles. You do not need to make noise to enjoy using a motorcycle.

Many cities have omnibus noise ordinances that cover all non-vehicular noise and they limit the decibel range and frequency and they also allow variances based on reasonable circumstances. Like in my neighborhood a pile driver was allowed a permit for the construction of a public school. A helicopter can get a permit to put an AC unit on the roof of a business or home. But the permit makes sure that such variances don't take place at 3am when most people are trying to sleep.

But there's no such limitation on a needlessly loud motorcycle roaring through the neighborhood at 3am and leaving a wake of bleating car alarms in its path.

Then the job should be to go after that offender at 3 am not the guy that has pipes on his bike to warn knuckle heads in cars that their is a bike in the lane they were turning into.

In a perfect society, there would be a cop around to witness that event. In the other case if they are wearing a florescent yellow safety vest, they will been seen even if the car has his stereo full blast.

I don't know about other drivers, but I can see a bright blue Ford GT coming for half a klick behind me. Black leather clad biker - might as well be camo against the black/blue pavement. Yellow vested motorcycle cop, easily seen. Case closed.

when my neighbor idles his diesel pickup truck, it sounds like a concrete mixer. I'd rather listen to a Harley

Diesel engines have come a long way. Many new ones don't sound that bad.

More than likely. A newer Dodge Cummins TD engine sounds not much different than a gas engine. You don't have to shut it off in a drive-thru so the employee of the month can hear you speak.

That's the point. This new bylaw won't affect guys with stock pipes, they'll be within limits. It's the look at me crowd that's going to be affected. Loud pipes are all they have, since they'll never blind anybody with the brilliance of their intellects.

I was downtown over the weekend. From several blocks away, I heard (almost felt) a bike exhaust reverberating off the buildings, making echoes throughout downtown. That's the kind of ass this bylaw is designed for.

Soon, we can hope they get a standard way to test for earth shaking hip-hop civics, and POS fart cans. Too bad we couldn't outlaw 'donks'. You just can't unsee some things.

I could not care less about the sound level, it is the hypocrisy of the straight pipe crowd that annoys me.

The tired and BS arguement that "pipes save lives" is about ready to drive me postal. The same morons who spout off that crap are the ones you see riding wearing nothing but sandles, shorts, a T-shirt (maybe) and a freaking skull cap.

They could not care less about their safety, it's their freaking egos that are in danger.

I have been riding for 37 years, on the highways and byways for 30 of those years and not once did I ever have so much as a close call. Why? Because I pay attention instead of looking for attention.

Right Arm!

I was in a cafe in Colorado listening to a couple of yikers (yuppie harley boys) talking about how important it was to wear leathers in case you crash - how people who don't wear leathers are idiots. So far, so good, but then the discussion turned to how helmet laws were an infringement on personal freedoms, and how they would never be pussy enough to wear one. I guess there's nothing up there worth protecting for those two anyway.
