poquas poquas:
They (pitbulls) are not "by nature" any more aggressive than any other dog.

Forgive me if I respectfully disagree. The dogs were specifically bred for their aggressive and tenacious natures. Like a fine racehorse, a good pit bull could earn thousands of dollars in the dogfighting 'pit' and the breed arose from devotion to the 'sport' of dogfighting.

Absent the perceived need for a dog capable of sheer brutality, the breed would not exist.

I'll not argue to ban them any more than I want to ban guns. But where it is reasonable to expect people to practice utmost safety with a gun as opposed to other types of tools, it is also reasonable to expect pit bull fanciers to adopt safety practices in line with the inherent dangers of their dogs.

No. They are bred for their ability to be trained to fight and for the strength of their jaws for fighting. They are not by nature aggressive.

People make dogs aggressive by training them, mistreating them, or severely inbreeding them. That applies to any dog.

Not all breeds are = in attitude poquas.

Some dogs are more aggresive, some dogs are stoic, some dogs practice Pacifism (like the lhaso apso), some dogs are fearless (terriers) and some are just wimps.

It's called temperment. Every breed has one. And there are always exceptions to the rule, but as a rule a pitbull has a much higher chance of attacking you when compared to a collie, lhaso apso, etc etc.

Where I live the majority of pitbull owners are part of this "i got big balls yo" demographic....

Any dog can and will bite. Some dogs are by nature more aggressive though so it depends alot on the owner and the training. I love dogs but would never get one that has had a bad rap in the past, dobermans, pitbulls, rotties etc.

BartSimpson BartSimpson:
Pitbulls, by nature, are aggressive dogs and they've been bred to have powerful jaws that can do tremendous damage. Outlawing these dogs or requiring their owners to have special permits (as owners of wolves and wolf-hyrbids have to do in many jurisdictions) is not unjust. People who already own the dogs can be grandfathered in, but any new dogs would fall under the new law.

That sounds an aweful lot like the argument in favour of firearms prohibition...."f-a-v-o-U-r", Bart.

How do we spell awful in Canada?

So why whine to the newspaper. Kill the dog.
Dog does something like that, you kill it. Fast as you can. If you live in the city and can't just go home, come back with a shotgun and blow the thing to ribbons in front of the owner's face, you have to settle for the bowl full of antifreeze.
Might be a slow painful way to go, but it just shredded your dog right in front of you. Do you care?
