UNfortunatly your laws don't provided for the penalty for what this individual desirves. He hhouls be shot and smeared with pigs blood; unfortunatly that would not be PC.

I applaude CSIS for preventing what would have been a very ugly mess.

I know, your laws are far more effective at preventing murder. Far less gun crime than Canada too.

Course I read it. I'm well aware of the system I work in. Anybody getting 'Life' gets the same 2 for 1 and parole eligibility. Check out a few websites.

This is better than a 10 year term that I expected.

Go to court sometime and see the sentences handed out. You would see that in our 'justice' system this is a good result.

Some serious reform of the justice system is needed.

A sad day for Canada and Canadians.

Most of these '18' will be out in 2-3 years.......

and then what ?

Nothing will change Martin. Nobody has the balls to touch the justice system.

Remember how the Senate took the teeth out of the last crime bill? They wanted the 2 for 1 kept in instead of the Tory 1.5 for 1 and no minumum sentences for grow-op traffickers.

God bless the unelected Senate.

What happened to treason? Canadian citizens planning on or actually waging war on Canada should be executed.

I do believe we have to be at war to charge somebody with treason.

I think Life in prison is a good enough sentence. Sometimes it is better to suffer with what you have done all your life rather than die. If this guy really feels guilt then it is worse for him to live than to die. If he has not repented and still thinks like a moron that he is doing the right thing then the last thing we would want is him to die thinking of himself as a martyr. Think friends. Think.

And its good we have proof and enough information to indict him and stop these guys before they did something terrible. Sometimes the entire problem often comes to how to ensure they get indicted in the first place. We know they were trying to commit a crime and murder innocent civilians but how much proof do we have to punish them.

We Pakistanis have gone through this question for a long time and in many cases it has become a problem. For example during the Lal Masjid siege many of the terrorists we captured could not be proven guilty. They ended up released and many simply joined the ranks of the Swat Taliban becoming a nightmare later.

Welcome to CKA. Although this is a reasonable opinion, the problem is that the Canadian judicial system is far from reasonable. Many people see these "life sentences" as nothing more than a few years, due to the history of the courts within Canada. A life sentence might sound good, only if it actually meant "Life".

Treason applies to an accused who has tried to overthrow the government of Canada. These brave boys wanted to kill Canadians, innocent civilians, not overthrow us.

actually treason does include plotting to kill the country's sovereign.

If they did wish to plant a bomb with the intention of possible harm to Harper then they did commit treason.

Harper isn't the country's sovereign. The Queen is. I would assume if the Crown had evidence of the offence of Treason, the Police would have charged him/them with it, unless you are better read on the Criminal Code?

Well it may be that not enough evidence was obtained to say that the bombs and chemicals found were directly meant for government targets at which point the prosecution would stick with charges it knew it could bring up the evidence on.

It's not uncommon for the law to charge people with a lesser but easier to make stick offense. I think that's what happened in this case.

I can't see any deals on such a politically charged case. He got life, that's sending a message. Whether you think that mandatory parole is a good or bad, this guy got a very stiff sentence by Canadian standards.
