One of my first reactions when I saw it this afternoon was, 'Who let the Vorlons(or was it the Shadows) out?' Other than that, I thought it was an excellent movie with an interesting twist.
Yep, my thoughts as well.

I have to say I thought the update on the Enterprise was also great, especially extra firepower (in the form of tiny turrets firing pulse lasers).
I always thought Star Trek universe vessels weaponry was totally irrational, given 3-D space battles.

Re-defining accepted Trek canon (which I truly despise because I hate writers being held back by fans who take the mythos way too seriously) is generally off-limits so the only way they have to move forward with new storylines are through alternate realities. By the end of "Enterprise" the only real excitement they were able to generate among viewers was the two-episode Mirror Universe story with evil Jonathan Archer and crew stealing the Defiant from Kirk's reality away from the Tholians and giving Earth a superweapon to destroy all their opposition. From what I remember on other discussion boards at the time the idea of a whole new Trek series based completely in the Mirror Universe alternate reality was incredibly popular, even among those who were tired of Trek in general.
