How long does it take to "peacefully" shut down an embassy. I know in emergencies it can be done in minutes, hours if you don't want to leave citizens stranded. Yet by the reading it seems like they are doing this very deliberately, giving Canadian citizens plenty of time to get their affairs in order and the ability to get out of the country.
I'm pretty sure that is exactly the reason for the prior notice. If you are doing something like running an orphanage, you can't just bug out in the middle of the night.
