I can honestly say I give zero fucks about India or Pakistan. So I can say I've never paid attention to any of their spats.

This might give you a sense of scope. There is a border crossing between the two countries, and over the years it has become quite an event, when they open the gate daily. It's like two body builders posing on a beach. Neither can accept that the other is good enough. That is just the microcosm of the whole conflict.

And the crowds in the stands!

The fuck did I just watch.

Also, maybe it's just me and Bart can tell me if I'm off base, but that seemed sloppy from both sides. Out of sync marching. Standing at attention but constantly shuffling, adjusting rifles, looking around. It's the display I'd expect to see out of cadets, not a huge (apparently) ceremony like this seems to be.

It's pretty minor and I'm probably just used to seeing Canadian/US military doing it, but it seemed.. bad.

N_Fiddledog N_Fiddledog:
So we've heard two offerings of the Pakistani version of this recent air conflict on the Pakistani/Indian LoC border story.

Here's one we're getting from the west.

$1:
[color=#000000]Pakistan has said it will release the Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot it arrested yesterday (Feb. 27).

Well, the Indians can spin it how they like but their pilot was caught on the wrong side of the border. Fortunately, the current Pakistani PM has not the slightest interest in a war with India and would be the more predictable of the two leaders involved. Shootdowns involving other nuclear armed states are not directly comparable because of the visceral animosities in South Asia, fanned by social media, and the lack of reaction time if somebody goes mad and presses a button. Overall I suspect this incident will resolve itself. Khan’s deadliest foe remains religious fanaticism at home.

I think the idea is to be quick, not accurate. But I defer to military types that would know honour guard protocols.

The border ceremony is for public consumption and in an odd way illustrates how much South Asians share. A war should be the last thing on their minds. Both countries have many other appalling problems to sort out.

I'm just used to see stuff like the Tomb of the Unknown soldier guard change, or Arlington. That shit is like robots are doing it. So my perception could be skewed the wrong way too.

The Pakistanis and the Indians inherited their military traditions from the British and, sadly, they're not doing a very good job of emulating the Royal Army.

I looked at the videos and had to stop after seeing too many errors I had to stop.

Sloppy officers, idiots adjusting their headwear while on parade, out of step more times than I care to count, sloppy handling of their rifles, out of line, headwear not being worn at the same angle, nasty uniforms, etc.

I mean, fuck guys, look at each other before you leave the barracks and make sure everyone is neat and uniform before you go out.

Overall, if this is the best these guys can do for representing their nations right in front of their respective adversaries then I suspect they both suck in battle. Damned shame that both sides' militaries are self-propelled sandbags.

I'd fucking LOVE to get these guys in order. Either side.

Also, this is how you do a changing of the guard. None of that horseshit goosestepping in double-time if you can't do it right.

Seeing that in the video about sent me into a rage....I'd have had those guys practicing how to put on a hat for a whole fucking day if I'd seen that.

And I'd make it a silly damned hat, too. Something they'd get a lifetime nickname out of.

Sunnyways Sunnyways:
Well, the Indians can spin it how they like but...

Except it wasn't from Indian media. It was western.

And what they said was this:

$1:
Varthaman’s plane crash-landed on the Pakistani side of the Line of Control (LoC) that divides the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). This followed the breaching of India’s airspace by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in the Nowshera sector of J&K’s Rajouri district, which led to an air-skirmish between the two sides. At least one jet belonging to each side was reportedly shot down by the other in this confrontation.

On Feb. 26, a day before this incident, the IAF carried out a “non-military pre-emptive strike” on a terrorist camp of the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) group in Balakot area of the neighbouring country’s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, Indian officials said.

Both Indian and Pakistani leaders had yesterday expressed their intention to claw back the precipitous situation prevailing in the region ever since a deadly terrorist attack on an Indian paramilitary convoy in Kashmir a fortnight ago. A JeM cadre had on Feb. 14 detonated an improvised explosive device in Pulwama, resulting in the death of over 40 Indian paramilitary personnel.

I read another one yesterday from the BBC. They were saying "Here's what the Pakistanis are saying. Here's what the Indians are saying."

But the western media didn't want to commit on what they believed actually happened at that time. Today it's different. I gave you an example.

And yes they also said this:

$1:
Pakistan has said it will release the Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot it arrested yesterday

If that's what you want to hoist onto your shoulders and cheer about, enjoy. Changes nothing as far as my point of 3 different tellings of the tale goes.

There’s a reason Pakistan kept Obama up at night.

Obama was just acting over smart...Nothing else.

Obama was worried because Pakistan is infested with Islamic Extremists who are one coup away from getting their hands on the nuclear arsenal .

Tell us, was that before or after the locals beat the shit out of him ?

Oh and just as an FYI, public displays of prisoners...............

are against the Geneva Conventions.

So congratulations on breaking the civilized rules on the first day.

$1:
Pakistan has absolutely NO NEED to do stupid shit like the pulwama attack specially at a time like this

It is pretty obvious there are large parts of Pakistan the government has absolutely zero
control over. Hopefully your nuke depots aren't some of them.

Aww so he got a little ruffed up by the people he was about kill. Sorry Geneva convention only applies to prisoners of war, since India hasn't declared war, this doesn't apply on any captured Indian personnel. Technically he is an enemy infiltrator, spy and/or terrorist. And such can be trialed in a Pakistani court and sentenced to death.

But as a goodwill gesture of peace, we are releasing him unilaterally and without any precondition. We could have used him as a bargaining chip to release many ordinary Pakistani citizens languishing in Indian jails for decades.

Seeing those videos, I notice rage in the eyes of those soldiers. They would rather be sticking needles in the eyes of the other soldiers than taking the time to perform their duties properly.

Just my interpretation.

DrCaleb DrCaleb:
*cough*GuantanamoBay*cough*

If you believe Khadr maybe. One keeps hearing stories like this though.

$1:
Guantanamo Bay is divided into two parts; Naval Station and JTF or Joint Task Force; meaning all branches of the military working together. In order to get onto the JTF side of the island you need a special badge and clearance. I was able to tour the JTF side of the island and see the camps and detention centers from the outside-not inside-I saw no detainees.

Finally, and probably most important, is that according to multiple people I spoke with, nowadays the detainees at Guantanamo Bay are treated better than most soldiers on island. They receive excellent healthcare, food and are generally treated incredibly well: especially as some detainees are some of the world’s worst people. If they were to be held in federal prison, they would never receive the same treatment. Some detainees that have been transferred have begged to go back to GTMO.
