I have to say that the findings of the study should have been expected.

Think about it. You are an 18 year old kid. You have an abusive home environment. You don't have a lot of money or skills. You are essentially stuck in your abusive environment.

Enlistment cures all of this. It gives you a safe place, it provides your housing, and you get paid.

You can think of it as the degenerate catcher, or you can think of it as the salvation for many broken persons. Based on the exemplary performance of our military, over a very long time, I like to think of it as the salvation for many of these abused people.

But too bad that the focus of the op has been totally lost here.

For my part in that, I apologize. I didn't foresee the backlash my comment would elicit. I should have, but I didn't.

Don't worry about it. Martin has it all my fault anyway.

Exactly. They're not broken tho, is the point. They are fixed up to some degree by the military. At the same time, not committing suicide as often as civilian abuse survivors doesn't mean they are all A-Okay. Some of the problems probably don't show up until they leave the support of the military.

True, my family was fucked up but what made me choose the Corps was that my parents wouldn't file their taxes and I needed them to do that for my Physics scholarship to the University of Arizona. No tax records, no scholarship. It was the Corps or community college. I chose the Corps and, eventually, Northwestern.

That's okay
We will be your boss someday"

Chant used by Northwestern student body during football season.

I suppose Canada should end the military over this justification to end the military.

End it? This is a justification to keep it. We need a place to keep these types. Sort of employed, but not really, housed together on the margins of society, out of most peoples' way, with rigid routine, a strict code of conduct under the watchful eye of supervisors.

And what "types" are these people that you talk about?

Those spoken of in the article. Did you read it?

Have any of you people actually read the current recruiting standards?

http://www.forces.ca/en/page/applynow-100#education

And that's only some of them. Extensive physical and mental evaluations are now standard.

Degenerate catcher, now that's a new one.

The military you people are talking about ended decades ago. Now they want highly educated, motivated, trainable troops who can think on their feet and when required deviate from the standard military doctrine. They don't want degenerates, or broken people and although they do get these people like everywhere else, they use natural selection to weed them out throughout their careers if, they become problems.

But, since we're talking about abused people just take a look around you next time you're at work and my guess is that you'll see as many of these poor, uneducated losers as you will in any branch of the military. But then doing that wouldn't allow you folks to stereotype the military, would it?

So, if it makes you people feel better to think that the military is made up of abused losers, marginalized people and degenerates then go for it because, given your obvious extensive time in uniform, I'll have to demure to your expertise.

So, these social pariah "types" gravitate towards things like prisons, boyscouts, cadets, service clubs, and first responder organizations?

Good to know that these marginally employables will have a place to go so they don't bother you.

They had the best network technologies program at the time and I graduated with my BS and over the summer of 2002 completed my CISSP, MCSE, CCNA, CNA, CompTIA A+, and I also had skills with HTML, MS Office, and etc.

All packed into 18 months.

Plus the fact that Evanston, Illinois sports some friggin' amazing BBQ places and some of the best classic American fare in the USA.

I didn't have time (or interest) in the traditional college experience as I was married and 37 at the time I started classes. I just studied, screwed around in Chicago on occasion, and studied some more.

One of the best of them was across the street from my off-campus dorm (they have a few of them) and it was just a Dutch door where you walked up, paid your money, and then wrapped in butcher paper they handed you some of the best damned beef ribs in Chicago. The ribs were about 18 inches long and meaty. There was a dark sauce and they gave you paper towels right off the roll as a napkin.

The classic way to eat them was to go to the bodega around the corner, pick up a 40 in a brown paper bag, get your ribs, and then sit on the curb eating your ribs, sipping your beer, and letting the occasional drip of sauce splat down into the gutter.
