Yes, in this case. Look up the word gastarbeider. Or to come at it from another angle, look up Geert wilders

A Turk living in the Netherlands what a surprise.

This kind of covers my first reaction but not for the reasons one might think. Brenda you're probably the most qualified to answer this but any others response would be welcome. Why would a Turk in general move to the Netherlands? Is there a lot of work avalible? Some cultural attraction that would bring him there and end up keeping him there? Just curious because IMO the Netherlands are so much colder then Turky and the culture so much diffrent that anyone from the middle east would feel utterly out of place there.

Freedom, work, benefits, lots of similar minded people, work, freedom, and did I mention benefits?

We brought in Turks and Moroccans (and Spaniards) to work in the 50's. A lot have stayed, some went back (with benefits), a lot are still coming based on the family roots. Turks living in the Netherlands send a LOT of money back home.

I don't know if this guy is a new Dutchie or if he is 4th generation or something like that.

Well obviously you don't know anything about Turkey. For starters its not in the middle east nor is the culture middle eastern. At worst its in between Europe and Asia.

Well of course now fiddly and gang will come in making up all sort of crap but because it has a sizable Muslim population.

I guess its Muslim population is in proportion to how much of Turkey is in Asia - ie most of it. What it is't is Arab, which is what people think of when saying middle east. If the middle east is the middle, wtf is the near east?

Okay, thanks for the insight. [B-o]

In truth I know very little of it. I know it's basic history and that's about it. My mistake on considering a part of the middle east. Myself I kind of look at any part of the old ottaman empire as being middle east. Nothing offensive or rude was ment by it.

Well do you also consider Bulgaria, Romania, Greece among a few to be also part of the middle east then ?

Eh...what?

Turkey is generally considered in the geographical Middle East, even though Turks aren't considered Arabs like a majority of the Middle East population. Iran's considered a part of the Middle East too even though Iran's population is not majority Arab either.

As another example, Egypt is also commonly considered a part of the Middle East even though only the Sinai Peninsula is a part of Asia, with most of Egypt being in Africa proper.

I'm not sure why you're being a dick to stratos over this, especially since, you know, he's not actually wrong.

I think Martin is just running an experiment in behavioral psychology. He puts out his idiotic stimulus and we react like trained seals.

So far I'd say Martin's experiment is working out as postulated.

This guy may not in fact have committed a crime that Canada can extradite him for. Our laws are written to prevent Canadians going overseas and harming kids, the law says nothing about foreigners. There are lots of complications in this case, and Canada may never get our hands on him.
