I have little patience for pacifists of any religion. It's always easy to be a pacifist when someone else is fighting on your behalf.

As to Christian pacifists they are misled. Jesus was not a pacifist and He did not preach pacifism.

He did say to 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.'

To me that means if I want peace I give peace. It also means that if someone else tries to kill me I get to kill them right back.

You're living by do unto others as they do unto you. You're leaving out the "would" part.

I reread the column. There's actually a few things I agreed with, such as the ridiculous way every foreign threat (no matter how laughable these enemies turn out to be in reality) gets turned into the reincarnation of the Third Reich by our politicians and media, and how the bulk of the sheep-like herd of the population (not exempting myself from that particular reflex either, BTW) invariably go along with it.

The only problem is that Remembrance Day is not the thing to have this argument or debate over. Leave it alone for what it is, and what it was always supposed to be, a quiet and thoughtful memorial for those who were lost on our behalf. Not everything absolutely has to be turned into part of the never-ending political/philosophical meta-conversation that's always going on around us.

Actually, when I rethink that, I retract that. You are exactly what I think a Christian is.
