Jabberwalker Jabberwalker:
Do you remember the movie "The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming!" in which a little Russian diesel submarine grinds ashore off of a fictitious New England island? Within hours, everyone on the island goes berserk, driving about in mad circles, carrying every gun that they have, wanting to shoot at everything that moves ... "madly riding off in every direction". The director (the Canadian Norman Jewison) nailed a basic feature of the American character in that movie. After 9/11, they collectively rode off, madly, in every direction ...

Apparently YOU don't remember that movie because at the end of it and at great risk to themselves the Americans helped the Russians get their sub back to sea.

And, in THAT, the director nailed a basic feature of the American character and that's why the movie was a hit with American audiences. If all it did was portray us as the s#itheads you see us as then it would've bombed.

I didn't say that big heartedness and generosity were not also part of the American character, but excitable!!! The Excited States of America!

Here's the kind of story that makes me completely appreciate the Russian point of view:

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/08 ... %20Buttons

See, the thing that consistently pisses me off with BS like this is the militant gays who do this kind of thing NEVER do it to muslims, just to Christians.

The Russians see stories like this and they know for damn sure they don't want it in their country.

$1:
The Russians are acutely sensitive to the Westernization of their culture and they're also deeply attuned to the degradation of their culture via Western influence. Putin, in particular, is quite in tune with this.

It's always been this way with Russia. They want to be a part of the West but not like the West.

$1:
See, all of the stuff about McCarthy wasn't paranoid drivel. Nope, the VENONA decrypts and the later declassification of Cold War secrets by Boris Yeltsin showed that Soviet influence in Hollywood was widespread and they had mulitple goals which all focused on literally demoralizing America. Meaning that they wanted to distance our society from our moral foundations.

So homosexuality is really a Soviet plot to destabilize the West? Remind me again; who won the Cold War?

$1:
Now it's coming right back at them as the influences that Soviet provocateurs advocated in the US and Europe are now coming right back onto their shores. They gave Americans a thirst for porn and now Russia's youth are finding the best paying jobs in Russia's porn industry. They pushed gay rights in the West and then it came back to them in spades.

And people like Putin know that his former agency is the source of this and he's worried because Russia's birth rate is unsustainable, his best people don't want to live there anymore, and what people do live there are amoral to the point that we see things like Pussy Riot desecrating the holiest place in Orthodox Christendom. And if anything triggered a crack down on liberal culture in Russia it was this one act of thoughtlessness.

So Hugh Hefner and Larry Flynt are actually Soviet provocateurs? Come on man, you know this is ludicrous.

The reason so many youths wo go into porn is because of Capitalism. There's a limited pool of people willing and able to do it, hence the pay.

You don't like the fact the games are in Russia or China that's fine then just don't watch the damn games and they don't get your money.

It's what I do every damn time now because the Olympics have made it clear they don't give a damn about human rights. Same damn thing I do with companies like Wal-Mart.

Vote with your wallet or your time. If it's not worth it or offends you don't give it to em.

If it's someone from an EU state then Russia can be expected to turn off their gas for the winter.

The American (and general Western) "thirst for porn" didn't come from Russia. Surely you don't really believe that.

There's a simple solution - no displays of overt gay behaviour by athletes while in Russia.

I think all the ideas in this thread about pushing a gay agenda into the Russians' faces are a little ludicrous. I don't see the importance of it. Can't act "straight" for a couple of weeks?

Uh, yes, I do. If you read the declassified VENONA documents and the declassified companion KGB documents that verify VENONA concerning Hollywood contacts you'll find a pattern that promoted sex and pornography in entertainment. Maybe they're not responsible for all of it, but they certainly did their part to get the ball rolling.

Just because you've grown up in the current culture and you accept it as 'normal' does not mean it was always so.

Regardless of VENONA and Hollywood, I think you are too easily putting blame in the wrong place. The American (and Western) thirst for porn has little to do with Russia. And the Russian porn industry is a response to demand, it didn't create the demand.
