There's one born every minute. But I read soldier's comments that they were glad they were going to Astan because it would be good for their careers. I guess if you make it thru reasonably unscathed, that's true.

I don't understand this. I thought soldiers said they are reluctant to go to war, but take on the heavy burden for the good of the country. We should say a big thank you to them for that. But this sounds more like guys that want some action. Any action, the reason for it doesn't matter. Let's just go and kill some scumbags.

Soldiers and sailors are well trained and well motivated folk who want to use that training for the good of people. Whether it's in Darfur to help refugees, the Med to keep an eye on Syria, or any other hotspot needing our help, if they feel that what they are doing is helping people, then generally speaking, they'll go and they'll want to go. It of course can become more complicated by politics and such, but at its core it is generally that.

No surprise this would be lost on you. The only service you've done is for yourself.

Would rep you if I could.

It's better that he service himself than constantly disappointing a partner.

I don't think the public would have the appetite for another Bosnia where our boys sit horn idle really doing little to help save act as bullet sponges.

Especially for an organization that seems bent on embarrassing and humiliating Canada whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Excuse my ignorance, but wasn't that a NATO intervention?

UNPROFOR was the UN Protection Force in Bosnia in 1992. NATO was also involved in support of UNPROFOR.

It was rather complicated.

And how has the UN "humiliated and embarrassed" Canada?

It's been in the news once or twice. It's the same organization that looks like it might give Syria a seat on the human rights council.

Why not try to resolve Somalia, a real issue where the country actually needs major help stabilizing due to an insane number of factions fighting over control of the area?

Because we're not willing to impose cultural change and it is the local culture that causes the most problem in Somalia. When every little boy dreams of growing up to be a warlord then killing off a few warlords only makes room for the new ones.

Stay out of Somalia because you and everyone like you is absolutely unwilling to do what it takes to fix that country. You'll send in the troops and then curse them for doing their jobs, you'll spend fortunes that could be better spent elsewhere, and in the end you'll have accomplished FA.

Yeah, democracy sure sucks, doesn't it. It'd probably be a whole lot better if the UN was a dictatorship run by the USA, right?

The UN was the West's playground until the mid-60s - when the West had the numbers in the GA, now that the West is in the minority, the UN is a bunch of crap. You sound just like any number of people on this forum who complain when their chosen party doesn't gain a majority.

But when the West could use the UN to stick it to the PRC or the USSR (Korean conflict, Cuban Missile Crisis), we all loved the UN.

Suck it up - that's life in a democracy - sometimes it makes decisions you (or your friends don't like.

Besides, 99% of the power at the UN resides in the Security Council, and three of the five powers with vetoes are all Western nations. Guess it isn't so bad after all...

The UN is much like democracy itself. A terrible way to run things except for all the other solutions.
