Not possible with the information given. It's also unimportant what I think. I don't think they were moderates before prison, but I think they came out of prison much more radical then they went in.

You asserted that the men in question were radicalized in prison after they were convicted of radical activity.

If so then they were not radicals beforehand. That makes them 'moderates' in the popular vernacular.

Or the story is wrong and these men were radicals when they were arrested and sent to prison for doing things that radicals do.

If it's of any consequence to you I actually say it's the latter.

I don't think the popular vernacular is robust enough for this situation. 'Moderates' don't recruit foreign fighters, but 'Radicals' are the ones willing to die for a cause. I don't know if they were that devout enough to the cause to die for it beforehand to meet that criteria, so I'll say the story didn't give me the information to make that determination. If they were, then they'd be 'radicals' before prison.

Either way, live bodies would have been preferable; but dead is fine too.
