You're not allowed to travel while on EI, with certian exceptions, such as death in the family.

How are you going to go to your interview 500 kms away then? :?

skype or telephone. Quite common nowadays

True that. Here about it a lot more and why not?

Not much point in having this low cost technology if we aren't going to use it.

I wish.
I agree that it is quite common in personal relationships, but business? I haven't run into it yet.
You'd say that every business (big or small) would have a website and email, right? They don't...

There is a lot of work that could be done from home (or remote, or however you want to call it), but it is still not done and businesses still have offices while they don't need them.

Sounds like a quandry. Businesses want you there in person to apply, while EI prevents travel, and anyway, who's got money to travel on EI? Business in Canada that's seeking workers needs to step up, open hiring offices in places of high unemployment, and help with transportation and housing to the new site. FT McMurray for instance, screaming for workers. Well, hire them where they live, help them re-lo, and provide transportation. I was just told today that a trailer home in McMurray rents for $5000 a month, because there is so little accommodation available. How does business expect people to pay that even with the high wages they pay? We need much better co-ordination between business and govt to get Canadians working, instead of always importing people.

The Canada Remembers Times newspaper, for ages 12-18, focuses on educating older students about Canada’s rich military history and heritage, while making them aware of the interesting personal stories and experiences of Veterans, Canadian Forces members and all those who have served in the cause of peace and freedom, at home and around the world.

This might help

Well, let's not ignore the obvious. The vast majority of the population is very disconnected from the vets of any war unless of course they have relatives how have served and fought. Add to that, this country has not truly shared in the experience of war since WWII. Since that communal sacrifice where the whole country focused on winning a conflict, all wars have been on the social and economic periphery. People generally don't have a stake in the efforts of the vets since then.

Let's face it, people can't generally empathize with the sacrifices of the vets when they've never been required to sacrifice in the name of conflict.

This is the very reason it rings hollow for today's generation. You can learn all you want about the subject in school but the events are so far beyond the experience of most of us that we cannot connect to it on a personal level.

It's actually quite common in business these days. There's an age gap there still as some older business owners have not yet discovered the advertising benefits of having a well designed website or seen the use for technology in interviewing candidates who are not local. I would hazard a guess that it isn't as common in some rural areas as well. All of the VPs and managers here use it for long distance interviews and some even use it regularly for voice communications with remote ops in camps inside and outside the country. Since most of these have at least some sort of connection these days.
