We were on that ship back in 2008. Did the same route on the eastern Med but at least the Captain was sober on our cruise!

He claims the rock wasn't on a map. The reports said that they passed by this place 50 times a year. The rock never altered its position...the captain or the OOW altered the ship's course for some reason.

I would say Italians in general don't do well in a crisis, despite their
penchant for creating so many of them.

People fighting over life jackets, a crew that wasn't prepared for the emergency, crew who didn't know what was going on and giving false information to the passengers. It's like nothing was learned from the Titanic. Plus apparently the captain deviated from the preplanned course.

Like I said earlier in the thread I was a passenger on this very ship back in 2008 and the crews lack of professionalism doesn't surprise me one bit. The actions of the passengers also doesn't surprise me as I had never met so many ignorant, rude people in one place since the last NDP convention!

The abandon ship drills they ran onboard the ship were a gigantic jug fuck with no clear direction being offered to the passengers in any language! The crew didn't seem to have a clue.

Not one bit surprised at how this worked out.

Possibly but I get the feeling from some of the passengers comments that the standard of training was probably the same.

This update says 6 dead, 16 unaccounted for. The captain is in jail but not charged. Worries of a fuel leak in a Dolphin sanctuary. The boat had apparently been taken manually off course.

Somebody is in big trouble here.

Oh right! They found 2 bodies in the ship. That makes 5 (duhhhhhhh, sorry about that). The latest I read in the Dutch paper is 15 unaccounted for... I sure hope they will locate them ALL...

I also read they found 2 alive in the ship, and one in the water that was rescued.

If I was a betting man, I'd guess that very few of that crew was Italian.

I've been on Carnival Cruise ships before, and most crew is either from the third world or Eastern Europe. About the only people onboard from the West are entertainers. The last time I went on a Carnival Cruise (out of Long Beach, CA), I was unable to find a single American crewman onboard.

Either way, it's a horrible thing.

NBC News down here had extensive coverage. 11 dead and 29 missing they're saying as of about 1 hour ago.

Seems the Italians do not care to run the lifeboat drills and it is turning out that the drills are frequently skipped on ships departing Italy. That particular policy paid off in spades, didn't it? I guess I'm wondering what would have been the result had this ship had, say, a collision at sea that caused it to sink in less than an hour. What would the death toll have been then?

Lisa and I have been on three cruises with Princess Cruises and each time the lifeboat drill took place before the ship left port. Also, just because I'm paranoid, I always pack two self-inflating life vests for the two of us just in case things get nasty in an emergency. They take up very little room in the luggage and they're worth bringing because there's no substitute for them when you need them.
