Government has no right to dictate what women wear

EDMONTON — Jason Kenney is supposed to be Canada’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. But this week, he’s established a new role for himself, as national fashion arbitrator, star of his very own version of What Not to Wear.

On Monday, the Calgary MP issued an official fashion decree, banning an orthodox Muslim woman who wears a niqab or a burka from taking the oath of Canadian citizenship — unless she uncovers her face in front of the judge. Ostensibly, that’s so that citizenship court judges can visually check to ensure that women are actually repeating the words of the oath aloud.

The anti-Harper media in Quebec are against it too, calling Kenney and the Conservatives "reactionaries", "xenophobes" and "anti-culturals".
