It's an old law, understandable when it was introduced, before Pensions.

It's a scary thought that people can be held legally endebted to someone who they had no say in being involved with. Parents choose to have children, they shouldn't be allowed to reach back and say "hey, you owe me."
True enough, if parents did a decent job of raising their children,
there wouldnt be a need for such a law to exist today.
Help should come from love and respect, not greed and selfishness.
On the other hand, to just roll over and condemn older people to the care of
the State, doesnt say much for our society either.
DOesnt really apply here, though.
Often times the kids shouldn't even need to be relied on, if the parent saved their pennies for retirement. Hell even coin jars help, I have collected over $300 just by saving my coins over a period of 3 years.
