OnTheIce OnTheIce: Thanks Capt. Obvious. "Plus" also means "in addition" to. Yeah, but it's not "in addition to" if the worker's pay is being deducted to pay for it. OnTheIce OnTheIce: Meanwhile, their benefit package is quite nice compared to their contribution. So what's the contribution ratio then? OnTheIce OnTheIce: I wouldn't be complaining if I was in that role as a new 'postie'. And I wouldn't even get out of bed in the morning to make $19/hr.

Can someone remind me what "post" is. Can't seem to recall. I think my son is taking it in history right now.

You know everything, I'm surprised you don't have the statistics in front of you.

they sure do not pay for their pension since the fund is 3 billions in debt. They also do not pay for their 7 weeks off.

Curtman Curtman: Or maybe you should be complaining that there is no union looking out for you.
I don't need a union looking out for me. I've done just fine without one my entire career. I've been in the situation to vote for a union before. Voted "No".

Proculation Proculation: they sure do not pay for their pension since the fund is 3 billions in debt. Huh? Debt in a pension fund has nothing to do with who pays into it. And the posties absolutely DO pay for their pensions. Proculation Proculation: They also do not pay for their 7 weeks off. Sure they do.

I don't agree with unions for civil servants (or for crown corporations). There is no economic pressure on the employer to settle for reasonable wages based on profits. There needs to be a mechanism in place to ensure the civil servants are paid a fair wage, but striking isn't it. I'm all for unionization for large employers in the private sector tho. Those unionized wages could then be used as a basis for civil servant pay.

(Wonder if it's really 7 weeks tho). And the portion of the benefits and pension paid by the employer (bet it's at least 1 to 1) need to be considered during bargaining.

Give me a monopoly, I will turn profit every year too It's a government service - makes sense to have a monopoly. And if they can do it at a profit, so much the better. Surprising since volume of 1st class mail, the only thing they have a monopoly on, is going down and down.

PublicAnimalNo9 PublicAnimalNo9: What monopoly? Between e-mail, FEDEX, UPS, CANPAR, Purolator, there are plenty of choices to send mail and packages, and usually more efficiently $1: Canada Post is the national postal service of Canada. For nearly thirty years, it has retained a monopoly on all letters weighing less than 500 grams traveling within the country.
