Quite frankly I think more people should be less concerned with the leader and more concerned with the platform. Its entirely the reason why our politics/politicians suck so bad. Its a popularity contest rather then a "who can run the country best" or a "what party ideology best suits me".
Would the Greens do better with somebody like David Suzuki in charge? How about an Ed Begley Jr. He very much lives and extols the green message. People like to make fun of the green save the planet type of people. It helps alleviate the guilt they secretly harbour that they are helping to destroy the planet for future generations.
The Greens platform in the last election was nothing more than laughable. For anyone who is serious about the environment it was all feathers with no chicken. May is a wing nut, about the only positive thing positive I can say about her is that she has helped draw attention to her party (and not all ways in a good way) by being so damn persistent, outlandish and annoying.
And on your first point, I think the fact that Harper is sitting in the PM’s seat disproves that. Personally I think Iggy and Layton are a hell of a lot more personable than Harper but I think people voted for the party who they thought could best manage the economy. You can’t tell me it was Harper himself who won over the masses via a popularity contest.
The Greens would be better served by a leader who people could take more seriously but for now I think they enjoy a default vote from those who would vote for anything green so I can’t see her hurting their cause to any great degree in the mean time.
