It is impossible to help people who are unwilling to help themselves.

The want, during thousands of years they were living in their areas without problems, we caused problems with our weapons, industrialisation and way of life. That's our fault that they have nothing to eat and Africa is sinking in blood.

On the contrary, I think what Africans need the most today is to be left alone to get their house in order.

See, that's what I love about Canadians! You say something a certain way and people thoughtfully nod their heads in agreement.

An American, meaning the exact same thing with the exact same proposed result, would simply say "F*ck 'em." and there'd be no end of uproar and outcry over the comment.

Thanks for the enlightening comment. [B-o]

When you say it Sock's way it sounds like "Tough Love".
When you say it your way it sounds like "Tough Luck".

We have folks in this country that need help. That is what we should be more concerned with rather than supporting a bunch of half assed tribal thug area that used to be nations.

Brother, African history is far, far bloodier than European, Asian, or even Islamic history. Their oral histories of wars read like pulp fiction to Westerners with bloodshed on an utterly unimaginable scale of brutality.

I assure you that without European influence in Africa there would be far fewer Africans today as they'd have kept Africa the abbatoir that it was when the first Europeans arrived. The Europeans, especially the bloody Belgians, were no paradigm of virtue. But they didn't slaughter whole tribes of people because they at least valued living Africans for cheap and slave labor.

In most modern African countries even today it is not uncommon for tribal wars to break out simply because someone rode a horse on the wrong road or some other trivial action that stirred up dormant blood feuds of the past.

What about this tribal war that broke out over a pig?

Pig War

$1:
The Pig War was a confrontation in 1859 between American and British authorities over the boundary between the United States and British North America. The specific area in dispute was the San Juan Islands, which lie between Vancouver Island and the North American mainland. The Pig War, so called because it was triggered by the shooting of a pig, is also called the Pig Episode, the Pig and Potato War, the San Juan Boundary Dispute or the Northwestern Boundary Dispute. The pig was the only casualty of the war, making the conflict otherwise bloodless.

Generally speaking any type of foreign aid usually boils down to taking money from poor people in rich countries and giving it to rich people in poor countries.

Not all the time, but it happens way too often.

The pig was a mere excuse for both sides to press unresolved territorial claims. Given that the pig was the only casualty then that drama was a mere pig in a poke compared to the current fifteen recognized wars being fought in Africa. That doesn't include the several hundred ongoing tribal conflicts that have claimed untold hundreds of thousands and perhaps even millions of lives over the past few centuries.

Very true.

It's been a perplexing thing to me that, as a rule, the individual Africans I've met have been outstanding people be they from Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, South Africa, or Kenya. But, collectively, Africans somehow manage to make a mess of their countries. I've no idea how they pull that off.
