This reminds me of a lot of laws in, particularly, the Southern USA (some of which are still on their books) that prescribe things like the maximize sized stick that may be used to lawfully beat your wife.

In California we had a Legislator whose part-time pursuit was identifying outdated laws and having the Legislature repeal them instead of risking that someone would want them enforced.

We really had a law until recently that mandated a car driven after sunset to have someone walk in front of it with a lantern to warn people that a car was coming.

EyeBrock EyeBrock:
Spanking a kid our whacking your wife? Come on xerxes. Are women mere children that need corrective physical punishment? I can't believe you posted that.

What was it Sean Connery said about women not too long ago: "You tell them once and then it's the back of the hand." Something like that. We're only fifty or so years out of social accetpance of wife beating, so let's not get too smug on ourselves here.

Maybe Russell Peter's could do a bit on his stand-up routine on beating your wife but making sure there are no lasting marks?

$1:
The "Rule of Thumb for Wife-Beating" Hoax

http://www.debunker.com/texts/ruleofthumb.html

$1:
Just how did the false account originate, and how did it achieve authority and currency? As with many myths, there is a small core of fact surrounded by an accretion of error. In the course of rendering rulings on cases before them, two Southern judges had alluded to an 'ancient law' according to which a man could beat his wife as long as the implement was not wider than his thumb. The judges, one from North Carolina and one from Mississippi, did not accept the authority of the 'ancient law.' The North Carolina judge refered to it as 'barbarism,' and both judges found the husband in the case in question guilty of wife abuse. Nevertheless, their rulings seemed to tolerate the notion that men had a measure of latitude in physically chastising their wives. Fortunately, as Pleck takes pains to remind us, they were not representative of judicial opinion in the rest of the country.

So much for that theory.

But I totally agree with the law that prevents unmarried women (or is it married ones) from parachute jumping on Sundays in Florida.

This is the orginal article

http://www.thenational.ae/news/uae-news ... discipline

Which also includes

$1:
Jihad Hashim Brown, the head of research at Tabah Foundation, said: "It's unlawful in Sharia - if taken in its entirety - to injure one's wife. It's unlawful to insult the dignity of one's wife.

"That is if we look at the tradition as a whole: the Quran, the hadith and writings of Islamic jurists."

He said beating one's wife was in conflict with "clear and concise" Islamic texts, which encourage Muslims to treat their wives in "love and kindness".

He said a Quranic verse might appear to allow certain things but if the verse was not "clear and concise", it should not enter courts of law.

"The vast majority of scholars overwhelmingly agree it is forbidden to injure or insult the dignity of one's wife," Mr Brown said. "If there is no clear text, then the court should treat it as a criminal act."

He added that Islamic texts stipulated the essence of healthy marriage was constant and mutual love. When any one of the couple felt there was need for beating, he said, "it's time for divorce".

I know this guy Jihad Hashim brown who is an American covert and the guy who works directly under him another American who also happens to be a convert and actually a very good buddy of mine and have discussed this to some lenght

It is pretty sad that something like this can happen and does nothing for the region or religion other than tarnish it. And most probally would and should be retracted.

Also happened recently when a similar cleric issued a "ruling" that said it was not allowed in Islam for Emaratis to marry foriegners ???? and after a few days had to retract it.

Also which is sad is again the selective quotiing from the article by the western press, just picking up the juicy bits

Truth is tricky. If you give a complete account with all the things that follow into it you've failed to say anything.

Like how it's hard to be right the older you get.
