wow, you misread my post and erupted, I didnt say 1 billion in 2003, I said in 2003, the estimate to reach a specific milestone ie 'acurate' would cost another 1 billion LIBERAL dollars, so you better multiply that by 1000 to get a real number.
It's hard to believe some people are so thick. Yes, the Liberals estimated in 2003 that it would cost up to a Billion dollars to set-up the registry, but that was an initial cost, not an annual expense.
$1:
The report found that the Canadian Firearms Program is operating efficiently at a cost of $1.1 million to $3.6 million per year
Like I said, a Conservative lie maintained by hacks like you...

In 2003, there had already been 1 billion spent on the registry, and the estimate was for how much more was needed.

Proculation Proculation:
The astronomical conservative deficits are not the gun registry fault. The conservative spent like crazy in a 'stimulus program' while he should have cut its spending and taxes. That's the reason.
The problem is that with the liberals, it would have been the same thing or worse. So we are screwed.
I agree the results would have been similar, if not the same, but the spending priorities would have been different.
For example, EI and the social programs (like their proposed home care plan for $1 billion) would have gotten more money under the Liberals, while corporate tax cuts wouldn't have gotten as much. The Liberals also wouldn't be promising to spend around $16 billion on new fighters until the economy turned around (then they'd spend $10 billion on less effective ones - maybe even 2nd hand ones... J/K). By itself, the fighter purchase isn't that much, but coupled with new transport planes and helicopters, it's a rather large sum. And they still haven't thought about replacing our 40 year destroyers either...
I think defence spending in a recession is fine, but I think the Liberals would also have been far more willing than the Conservatives to spend it at home (like on Buffaloes from Viking Air instead of Spartans from Italy - as the Conservatives are expected to). After all their track record (Iltis, LAVs, Griffons, Halifax FFHs, etc - a mixed record admittedly) shows that whenever possible, they bought from domestic manufacturers instead of foreign ones (or forced foreign companies to do some assembly here). It might have rankled the military, but even the Conservatives understand the benefits of spending defence dollars here in Canada instead of abroad.
The Liberals would get Canada's deficit down to one per cent of GDP within two fiscal years, Goodale pledged. Under the most recent Liberal governments, Canada's debt ratio was cut by more than half, he noted.
A major way of achieving that, he said, would be to cancel government plans to give corporations another 20 per cent tax cut, when the base corporate tax rate is already the second-lowest among the G7 countries.
The $6 billion in revenue that would have been lost because of the tax cut would then be earmarked for deficit and debt reduction, he said.
Yay! Campaign promises means a campaign soon.

Which would mean either another Conservative minority, or a Conservative majority. either way Iggy and company will still be on the outside looking in! Maybe it's time for the Liberals to have another leadership race.

Campaign promises are like buckets with no bottom or sides.
Unfortunately the Liberals don't have a bucket er leader.
1% of GDP in two years, give me a break, until the US economy recovers, Canada will also remain in the doldrums.

Why not? The Reform/Alliance/Conservative coalition can't claim it was a sneak attack a second time. It's no less democratic than prorogue.

These days the NDP and the Bloc don't want to tie their fortunes to the Liberal ship. The only people who seem to really like the idea of a coalition are Liberal supporters. If the Liberals truly want to get back into power they really need a better leader with a clear plan. Martin, Dion and now Iggy have been duds for the Liberals.

The NDP has no chance at forming a government without the Liberals. The Bloc are Conservatives, they have no place in a Lib/NDP coalition, unless they choose to support it again.
