Lemmy Lemmy:
My experience is that there is a small, often vocal, leftist, protest-type element on campus, but they're a minority. Most of the students I see in an economics department are little Alex P. Keaton wannabees. I don't think university campuses are any more leftist than any other place in society. Perception is often myth.

I dunno Lemmy. I've had recent personal experiences on at least 3 campuses in Ontario where the vocal left seem to be encouraged by a large portion of the faculty and also seem to be a rather large and powerful 'minority'.

Well who are these leftists? Sociology professors? Law professors? English literature professors? Maybe. Economics professors? Science professors? Engineering professors? Nope. I think you're seeing a vocal minority and concluding that it represents the majority (both students and professors). U of Guelph has a "tree-hugger" reputation, but again, that's a minority on our campus. The majority of students and faculty are either science/engineering types. I did my MA at Western and that's certainly NOT a leftist campus. It's largely blue-blood, silver spoon, old money, secret handshake types...defintely not leftist.

Maybe the proportion of vocal activists has a direct relationship to the distance that the said campus is from the CN Tower.......?

May I ask why? I'm afraid I don't get where you're coming from? :?:

He wants to inflict physical harm on her by magnetically removing her lip ring. That's how tolerant HE is.

I rather think it has more to do with the size of your Women and Gender Studies departments. I graduated in May as an engineer, and my more practical science courses didn't have the leftist tinge, but the closer you got to pure liberal arts courses, the more you could feel it in the air. Physics was good, biology had some unnecessary environmentalist tripe, and Marriage in Contemporary America was wooo crazy. Did fill a lot of requirements though.

Also, any college is going to have a more liberal perspective than standard simply for the fact that they are filled with a more liberal age bracket.

The good news is that the hardcore leftist feminists are left with only these crass stunts to pull ever since Harper yanked the public funding away from NAC-SOW (with deliberate and heavy emphasis on the 'sow' part of that acronym). These people always were irrelevant and are even moreso now without our tax dollars propping up their goofy retrograde 1970's causes. Another great argument for an eventual Conservative majority is that the Tories are the only ones willing to take away the undeserved and unearned tax dollars these sorts of groups will once again receive from the Liberals and Dippers.

I highly doubt that these hyper-politicized Judy Rebick Jr's represent even 1% of the ideas, values, or concerns that the vast majority of Canadian women see as important. But this is to be expected from people who somehow manage to stay on campus for most of their lives. It's not like Women's Studies is useful for anything relevant out in the real job market.

"Hey kids, your first exam is to crossdress for a day to see how the other half feels!"

Serious assignment. I really hate Womens Studies.

Free speech works both ways. The uni can give him his degree and students who don't like it are free to speak up about it - see how that works. Toews being a politician will have a tough enough hide to take it. In fact he probably is glad she said it, since it will, as we see here, get his base all stirred up.

A few years from now she'll probably be popping babies and voting for the Reformacons or at least married to somebody who does. (Since there's a gender gap in Reformacon support.)

I say Bravo! to her.. She said it like it is and he certainly did not deserve a honorary degree. Lets face it Toews is an Ahole. Spouting politics of fear where ever he goes. Bravo! We need more people like her who stand up for her beliefs.
Honorary degree for Toews.. what a load of old shit!

The most surprising thing of all, is who gave it to him.

I thought he said he was leaving politics....

Why - anybody force you to take it? You wouldn't catch me taking it, but what they want to assign is their business, and actually making men experience what it's like to be perceived as a woman for a day seems pretty valuable, and vice versa. Kinda like "Black Like Me" which I thought was a great book.

Sorry, that was an example from a course I didn't take, and I didn't intend to imply that I had. I had a number of friends who took the course to fill social science requirements. I find crossdressing as a method of teaching to be absurd, and the general quality and rigor of education within that department to be below par.

I wouldn't take a women's studies course because I would expect it to be totally biased with no free speech allowed in the class room. I wouldn't take a course that forced me to cross dress, because I wouldn't be comfortable doing it, which actually shows the point of the exercise. But your buddies could have chosen from a huge array of social science courses - psych 101 is always interesting, so what were they thinking.

Actually a woman's studies course that was open to all povs and honest discussion would be kinda interesting. Doubt it ther's too many out there tho.

What is the big deal about anyway? That honorary degree is going to hang on Toews' wall and no one is even going to give a flip about it in five years' time. Heaven knows I don't care about who has an honorary degree from the university I attend. (Well, other than my great-grandfather, but it was a long time ago so I only think about it occasionally at best.)
