I was hoping they'd honor the Welsh immigants into BC and rename the park Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

kenmore kenmore:
Stanley Park is a historical site.. known world wide.. we should never change the name.

Does history only go back 140 odd years? It seems to me the historical records indicate the natives had been there over 3000 years. There wasn't much fuss when they changed the name of the Queen Charlottes to Haida Gwaii, shouldn't be a big deal to change this name either.

Cause a fair amount of the Queen Charlotte population is Haida, vs Vancouver where almost the whole population isn't Indian. Besides how do we know the Squamish Indians didn't take it from some other tribe of Indians?. I know the local bands around my area used to fight all the time before settlers came (they were in the slave businesses before settlers as well). Canada more importantly isn't an Indian nation, so we don't need to change names just to make a small portion of our population happy. While at the same time making it hard for the rest of the population to pronounce the name of the park.

The Queen Charlotte Islands are still the Queen Charlotte Islands to me.

That's my point. Even if they change the name, it will still be known to the majority of people as Stanley Park.

Well really that logic should apply to all of Canada. Let's get rid of all those racist colonial names, and just use Indian ones. I guess Toronto is OK, but Vancouver, what's that about. Some dead white guy's name. We should be calling it 90rwe3w40r9powertnbvdft90reotdfhnbver09orhtger9bnerogteirughdpefbnerg9enr gberh9ergbv ! the way the natives did.
