I'm not worried about the Chinese one bit. Every second gen Chinese I know is a fully assimilated Canuck, and like I said, the recent immigrants came here to make their (and their kids) lives better, not play spy.

As for the bit about Chinese malls and such, there are places in Edmonton that only serve Polish/Ukrainian people. I don't care about them either. If someone wants to limit their business (either due to racism or a language deficiency), that's their problem, not mine.

Yep, although I doubt they suffer from lack of business. I see all kinds of specialty stores that deal with ethnic cuisine. Oriental, Indian, etc. A workmates wife is Polish from a very ethnic Polish family and says that they make sure they buy authentic Polish cuisine right down to the butter.

Doesn't stop them from fully being Canadian though. I don't know about the Chinese but he lives in the "Italian" part of Toronto and says he meets lots of people who identify themselves as Italian first. No one ethnic group or religion holds a monopoly who assimilating or not assimilating.

No, I'm sure some places aren't suffering business wise, but if anyone wants to cater to 10% of the marketplace instead of 100%, that's their prerogative.

I don't think they think of it as catering to a small segment as opposed to being a specialty store providing specialty items. I've noticed that the "specialty" stores around here seem to hyphenate like "Indian - Canadian Groceries". Never been in myself being allergic to spicy foods but I gather then offer ordinary items alongside of culturally ethnic foods.

I gather you shop mostly at Wallmart. They cater to everybody, everybody cheap that is.

You live in Edmonton? Then no wonder. There are lots of fully assimilated Chinese in Canada, going back to the time of the railway. But in Vancouver we had a huge flood of them beginning in the 80's. And that's what causes the problem - when a huge flood of one particular group comes in all at once. There's then little pressure on them to integrate and they find it easier to clump up and retain their homeland's ways and retain an allegiance to their homeland. It's not unique to Chinese, but they were the big flood in question here. Well them and the Punjabis, and the same problem exists there. (eg Air India).

Actually, I Shop at a variety of places; Costco is my favourite, followed by T&T Supermarket (think of Safeway but with an Asian flair), and on occasion, yes even Wal-Mart. Their infant section has a great selection and good prices - usually.

Before T&T opened up in Edmonton, if I wanted to some obscure Chinese/Japanese ingredient, I did shop in Chinatown or one of the specialty shops scattered around the city. Since then though, T&T carries it pretty much all of it under one roof. and their DimSum/Hot Deli counter is great for lunch!
