I kind of like the idea of the GG being an apolitical figure, as he is supposed to represent the Queen who embodies the Nation and not a particular set of political beliefs. This is why I wouldn't support Joe Clark.
As for a military man getting the job, I don't think that is necessarily inappropriate, as the GG is the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. However, I'd be more comfortable with someone who wasn't such an important figure already. Dallaire, for example, has already been a general and is also a senator. How many honorary posts can you give a guy?
I think it should go to someone who can be trusted to continue the revalorisation of the post that Clarkson and Jean have begun in the last 10 years. They caused a couple of controversies with accrued spending and doubts about Jean's loyalty to the country. But aside from those hiccoughs they have brought life and vitality back to a position that had basically become viewed as a sinecure kickback position that PM's gave to their political allies. Apparently, some on this board, for partisan reasons, think that it should revert back to such a position.
I for one would prefer someone who is beautiful (or handsome, as the case my be), graceful and generally likeable to fill the position, as it doesn't hurt to have a bit of glamour and prestige in Ottawa for a change. It's not bad publicity for Canada as a country either, when the person who represents us abroad is well-spoken and easy on the eyes. This is mainly why I like Michaëlle Jean. Non-Canadians see her and think 'Wow, I never pictured Canada like that before!'

As I said in my previous post, it won't be someone from Quebec since it's always alternated. It needs to be a non-political person. I think we have had enough journalists and ethnic persons (nothing against them but I think we made our point). So we are looking for an english-canadian, not affiliated to the media. An ex-military (General Hillier ?) could be a good choice. But it won't be accepted by the public. It needs to be someone accepted by an overwhelming part of the population. Since a lot of people sees the CF as a bad thing, I don't think it would meet that criteria (even if the GG is Commander in Chief of the CF). So, what's left ? An artist (Atom Egoyan) ? A successful businessman (John Irving ?? ) ? A scientist (David Suzuki !) ? or maybe... a sportman (Steve Yzerman !!!).

I think what he means is that a lot of people haven't supported the missions our boys have been sent on in recent history. It's hard to find someone who genuinely thinks it's realistic for a country, even Canada, to not have armed forces as a means of defence, should it be necessary. I think it's the sometimes unnecessary use of said forces that some people have an issue with.

MacDonaill MacDonaill: It's hard to find someone who genuinely thinks it's realistic for a country, even Canada, to not have armed forces as a means of defence, should it be necessary. Not that hard, go to Rabble, I'm sure you'll find at least one... or twenty...

What MacDonaill said is what I meant.
The CF is seen like an "Offensive force driven but the Bush war !"
But, Wayne Gretzy would be a great choice.

A hockey player? Who hasn't bothered to live here for twenty years? For the Vice Regal post?
We really are in a twilight zone.
