In spite of him being a jerk and speeding wayyy over the limit, the improper hand signal will probably be dropped. It's called freedom of expression.

As far as respect goes, sometimes it needs to be earned. Allow me to relate something that happened a while ago. The police were at my house one day asking about an occurrence that happened across the street. (I was not involved in it)
Anyway, after getting my name he kept referring to me by my first name. So in response, I referred to him by HIS given name. This pissed him right off and he promptly informed me his name was "Constable Clements"!! I told him as long as he was going to call me by name, I would return the favour. He actually gave up asking about the incident he came for and stomped off to his cruiser. It was pretty funny in a pathetic way.

Do you think the officer might have forgotten your last name while gathering the details?
Would you have remembered his if it wasn't pinned to his shirt

Maybe he did, but do you think maybe it was written down on his pad so he could make proper notes afterwards?
I don't have an attitude towards police btw, I've always been co-operative, even when pulled over. In my travels I have run across wayyyyy more cool cops than tiny minded fascist ones. Not saying Const Clements was one but his attitude sucked.

Assholes everywhere, like the guy who got the ticket for one.

Not sure how I am grasping at straws, you said cops are not out there on the line everyday, I merely pointed out how wrong you were by making you aware of one case where a guy put everything on the line.
So go ahead, start pulling up stories of drunk mounties, crooked metro cops, keep in mind the police, just like the Military is a cross section of our society.

While I dont envy the job I see how this may have been a little over the top. Hell the best thing you can do to most people when they give ya the finger is IGNORE them; most times it just pissed em off more.

Soon as I read this story I thought of this......

The fella is lucky he did not get pulled over by this cop.

If you can't take being given the finger, perhaps you're in the wrong line of employment.

No I don't think so, being smart enough to figure out how to give someone a ticket for flipping the bird makes her perfect for the job. The guy thought he was being cool flipping her the bird now he has a ticket for being stupid.

He deserved the ticket, he was a dick for flipping the bird, and arguably stupid. It doesn't make it against the law. That's her job... law enforcement, not power trip and ego satisfaction.

What would a cop tell you if you walked up to a cruiser and told the cop that someone just flipped you the bird and u wanted them to do something about it? I think they may just tell u to fuck off and man-up.

Although the guy didn't break any laws, he's lucky that he flipped a cop who has a sense of humor.
I have a vid clip which relates directly to this topic, but I don't know how to post it.

If swearing at an officer is against the law, then so should commonly understood obscene gestures.

Where I come from, it IS against the law (and the Hells Angels are not a criminal organization, as a side note ), and I am kinda surprised that here, it is allowed...

In the end it will be a judge who decides if this is actually an offence. The cop may not care if the person is found guilty and only wanted to piss them off by having to deal with the situation.

No, wearing a shirt that says 'I like Hitler' is freedom of expression. Flipping the bird is being an asshole, and being an asshole tends to result in negative reactions from people. You can't walk into a Hell's Angels club, start flipping the bird at all the big guys with beards and then start yelling "Freedom of Expression!" when they start using you as a human Sham-Wow. You think it's just cops who don't like having the one finger salute presented? Try flipping the bird at your letter carrier and see how good your service is after that.

I'm think the outcome at court will be 'guilty' on the speeding ticket, 'not guilty' on the improper hand-signal.

I'm kinda torn on this one. I'm sure the O Dot chick could have found something else on the car to do this guy for, there's always another offence if you look hard enough.
The 'hand-signal' thing is a bit lame. I see her point but it's still lame.
