I would think they just use ridiculous stunts like this, that breastmilk ice cream thing, the "sea kitty" declaration, etc, to direct attention to their more serious campaigns, knowing precisely how much attention they can get from the media, but I really don't know if it works in their advantage.
I absolutely support any effort to reduce cruel treatment of domestic animals, for example, but I would pass by anything PETA has to say about it because of the stigma around their name. I'm automatically biased against anything they do because of the stupid shit, and I believe the net result is that it hurts their efforts to raise awareness on the real issues.
