Because when you're driving down the road yourself, you'll never be able to commit the entire scene, from every angle, to memory, you couldn't do the same of every street in a good portion of the cities, and even if you could, you couldn't share it with the entire world.

What Google is doing is so far and away beyond "driving down the road yourself" that to compare the two is really absurd.

Exactly, in my job I very offten need to take photos of houses and most of the time entire blocks. No way am I going to knock on every door and ask.
