Streaker Streaker: poquas poquas: RUEZ RUEZ: In my hands my car is perfectly safe. Until it isn't. That's right. All it takes is a fraction of a second. That said, I haven't noticed all that much difference in traction between winter and all-season tires. It depends on what you're willing to spend. The difference between the "crappy tire" special and the higher cost performance tires is drastic. Especially in an all season rating.

Tegan Tegan: My point is that accidents can happen, irrespective of your supposed driving skill. Winter tires in some areas reduce the risk, so the law is reasonable in Québec. Why stop at winter tires? Why not make studs mandatory?

Stud's used to be mandatory in the BC passes, naturally,I fit right in there.

I have a better solution to this. Anyone who has had a winter accident must use winter tires. That way we aren't forcing a bunch of good drivers to spend money because others can't drive.

All seasons are great tire's untill about -3 celsius, then the more agressive winters are better as the rubber is made to grip at those temp's and colder. My big knobby tires are shit when the temps around 0 and there's snow and ice on the pavement.

RUEZ RUEZ: I've been driving for over 18 years with no winter tires. I've never had one accident in my life. Why should I be forced to buy winter tires? In my hands my car is perfectly safe.
I too have driven for almost twenty years and had only one accident (for which the fault was mine) in winter. The car did have winter tires on it, but I hit a patch of ice and slid into someone else. Not too much damage, but it happened because I was young and inexperienced. In the decade and a half since then, no accidents, even using all seasons all year long. This year, I was convinced by co-workers, family and the wife to put winter tires on. The car stops better, but winter tires don't mean you won't have an accident. An EPS cop I reported an accident (someone hit me) to last year told me there's no such thing as an accident. Every single one can be prevented by safe driving, and he fines everyone who is at fault, for driving with undue care and attention, following too closely, etc. I agree with him, accidents are 100% caused by reckless driving, be it speeding, following too closely, or driving too aggressively. No one causes an accident by driving safe and following the rules.

Very true Bootlegga, when winter weather arrives I don't drive like I would in the summer. I drive slower, I slow down well before a stop sign, and in general I pay much more attention to things around me. Changing your driving habits for the environment around you is key to safe driving. Leave extra early for work or appointments so you aren't speeding to get there. I have nothing against using winter tires, but I don't like the idea of being forced to use them because others are bad drivers.

There are plenty of laws that I don't think I need to follow but have to because people make mistakes.. Stop signs for example, why stop if there isn't a car for 30 Km in each direction? There are thousands of laws that you can complain about having to follow for unapparent reasons. Winter tires aren't going to stop accidents, or incidents, but they help and you can't argue that.

Actually stop signs have a very clear and useful function.

If you are driving with regards to other cars around you and are mindful of road/weather conditions, you won't have an accident that is your fault.

BS
I was rear ended at a 4 way stop. I saw the guy sliding but there was a vehicle driving threw the intersection.
No mistakes were committed, I wasn't even moving yet..presto! he hit me.
granted I wasn't at fault, but I am finding many police services (not just EPS) that say ANY accident is avoidable. Which is complete and utter BS.
