The proroguing of Parliament is unprecedented. It also potentially sets a dangerous precedent for our Parliamentary Democracy. If you're gonna lose, shut down parliament...
Of all the arguments on both sides, what I find to be the most dangerous and disingenuous is Harper's continued divisive attitude that could spark another National Unity crisis. Today Harper said he wouldn't be beholden or give a VETO to the Bloc, but that IN FACT is exactly what Harper has done to pass his last two budgets. Provide concessions to Quebec in order to get Bloc support on their budgets.
Harper said he is now inviting the other parties to present their proposals...Well that's what they had been doing and Harper chose to ignore the other parties and push forward his own agenda. During the last election he stated that he would govern like he had a majority even if he was elected with a minority. Well now because of that attitude we must now wait another 2 months before appropriate economic measures can be taken.
Also we already know what the two main measures he's looking at:
personal and corporate income tax cuts.
Well personal income tax cuts won't help ANYONE who is out of work and corporate income tax cuts ONLY apply to companies making a profit, so therefore it won't prevent ANY businesses who aren't making a profit from going under.
Exactly. You can prorogue government but can you prorogue a fiscal crisis? While Harper fiddles Canada burns. The very reason for this crisis to begin with! So now every time a PM feels he can't pass the house he just hits the pause button? Harper is being given a mulligan but it is not the GG who he owes his political soul to it's the Canadian people and he had best make good on his good fortune and not blow it again.
I see no reason to think Harper will be humbled or that in January his budget will pass. This prorogue my allow cooler heads to prevail for now but it has only postponed the inevitable.
