Farouk Farouk:
I have immigrated to Quebec from Algeria 3 years ago. Altought we feel more safe, this society has a lot of work to do before properly integrating the immigration population. They want you as immigrants for your skills but one you're there, the story is pretty much different.

The average Quebecer is nice on the surface, but behind every quebecer lies a xenophobic person as I have faced so many times since i arrived. Freedom to fully practice your religion is also a big negative.

Hopefully the Bouchard-Taylor commission is the beginning of a new area for this province because there is a lot of catch-up to do. I am glad to join a non 100% quebec forum where you get insulted all the time.

First you have to learn what work is: job is an activity that a person with money is not interested to do himself.

Second you have to learn what a religion is: a religion is revealing a truth by which it can resist false religions.

Third you have to learn what interculturalism means for Bouchard and Taylor: interculturalism is not a one-sided effort by French Quebecers to facilitate integration.

Benoit,

I don't understand the "first" and "second" part of your post. As for number three, I disagree with you : The French Canadians population is shrinking and we , the people from Maghreb , are the best option to keep the French language from becoming what it is in Louisiana .

We are doing our full part so the Quebecers should do theirs if we want that interculturalism to work , don't you think Benoit ?

and listen up Dalton.... Quebec stands up for our values and heritage...One specific recommendation aimed at ensuring the state's religious neutrality -- the removal of the crucifix hanging in the Quebec legislature -- was immediately shot down on Thursday. Within minutes of the report being published, Mr. Charest introduced a motion in the National Assembly supporting the crucifix as a sign of "our religious heritage." It passed unanimously.

No I don't agree, speaking French is necessary but not sufficient; in Quebec you have to accept that men and women are equal.

you got to give Charest credit for this....We cannot erase our history," Charest said Thursday in pledging to keep the crucifix where it is - hanging over the Speaker's chair.

"The crucifix is about 350 years of history in Quebec that none of us are ever going to erase, and of a very strong presence, in particular of the Catholic Church.

"And that's our reality. And those who come to Quebec are joining a society where that history is now something that is part of our story."

This particular crucifix can be put in a museum-like place without erasing our history.

and I say no to that big time... why.. why do we have to change our way of life because we ALLOW immigrants to come here.. they choose to come here... so suck it up.. if you are an immigrant and dont like what we have long established here then go to fuck back to where you came from.. you dont put our religion in a museum.. its not something that was it is in the now.. would you suggest putting the Quran in a museum? get real.. what we have going on in this country is a major erosion of Canadian history and culture.. I am a Quebecer,, a catholic and proud of it.. you spout off about protection of our language why not protect the religion of most Quebecers as well..

Separation of state and church is a Western value.

A crucifix is only an object that symbolizes some religious beliefs; all religious symbols should have no permanent place in our legislature.

For better or worse, at least Quebec has the balls to talk about this.

yup that's right. Thanks to being an island within an anglo sea. Protection of culture is important .........................mainly to politicians .
As for religious subject , the average person doesn't give a damn about the church.
