Or perhaps some of us believe in fixing a problem when it's small - and relatively inexpensive - rather than waiting till it absolutely HAS to be done.
I'd like to know if this is about fixing a problem or renovating an old building.

I'd like to know more too.

$1:
Auditor-general Sheila Fraser said yesterday that 24 Sussex Drive has not undergone a major renovation in 50 years, and needs extensive work to fix the plumbing, air conditioning, windows and electrical system.

I don't know about the air conditioning, but the others sound reasonable.
That's all that needs to be fixed? That doesn't require him to move out.

I think we need to send Mike Holmes in there, see what's really going on.

Beat me to it... :D At least we would know he'd be getting A+ work done and would make for great TV.

10 million and a year or more? Fixing windows doesn't take that. It sounds like a gutting and rebuilding to me. Some zealot seeks to make it a "green" building.

No mention of foundation or structural problems.......

Some LIBRANO appointee seeks to get $10 million for a $100,000 reno.

You've never had to live through a major reno, have you?
Yes, I have. We had our entire main floor in my house renovated. Plumbing is really the only one that should cause him to move out. The other don't call for it.

If Harper wants to stay and put off these renos then I think he should. Whether you like Harper or not, he did work hard to get where he is so he should at least have the choice to make the renos wait until there is a change in PMs.

I don't think moving your family across the country just to get kicked out of your new home for renos once you are settled in is part of the PM's job description.

Your own personal experience notwithstanding... some renos certainly require people to move out of their homes for the duration.
Of course. But that place is huge. They could live in one half of the house while the other is being renovated. It's not insane to think that they would stay. Sure he's being a defiant little bastard, but I can see why he wouldn't need to move out. Windows, Air Conditioning, and Electrical definitely do not call for it. Unless they had to redo all duct work in the house, but even then, they don't tear the house apart doing it. Seems like this is a story made from nothing.

No, you can't... because you don't know what needs to be done and how extensive the work is.

Seems to me a $10 million dollar reno might involve a little more than we can imagine.
Or it's 10 million dollars because 1) it's the government. 2) Because the house is old as hell. 3) because it's large.
