Personally I love the idea of giving this guy consecutive sentences. 16*14= 224+130 (13*10) giving him a total of 354 (new Canadian high score... until Bruce McArthur gets convicted) years to think about what he's done. I'll settle for the 24 years he'll most assuredly do.

She hasn't advocated blood justice for this guy, I'm sure she's quite happy to see him do time.

I doubt he'll even get 24 years.

Maybe 5.
Which means he'll barely do 2.

You may be right. But I think given how "big" this was, there will be a harsher sentence doled out.

Perhaps a harsher sentence but what time of that is actually served is another matter (there was no malicious intent, early parole for good behavior, etc, etc)

Regardless, the lives of so many people will never be the same :( The level of "punishment" this driver receives will not change that. He has to live with that too.

And if it turns out he had plenty of time to proceed but the truck stalled and the bus driver didn't react in time - that's just what might happen. With a little time added for not taking that possibility into account.

But the Junior Justice League is hoping more time for a road accident that Picton got for premeditated murder..

The laws at the time of the Picton conviction only allowed for sentences to be served concurrently. Harper changed that so terms could be served consecutively.

So yes, he could get more time than Picton. Justin Bourque is serving 5 life sentences no chance of parole for 75 years, Bissionette will probably 6 life sentences. Both killed less people than Picton. Picton is eliglible for parole after 25 years served. And your boy Picton was convicted of second degree murder, not pre-meditated murder.

The guy deserves his day in court, but at the end if convicted, he should spend the rest of his life in jail.

Question is, are they laying charges because that's what everybody expects them to do, or do they actually think they'll get a guilty verdict. :?

They spent extra time re-enacting the scene (or as Martin puts it, 'covering up'), and going over the trucks EPU data logs so that they could give the Crown the evidence they need that he intended to run the stop sign.

Without intent, it's just an accident. If they can prove he intended to run the stop, then the likelihood of a conviction is increased and the more serious charges will stick.

They wouldn't press charges if the crown wasn't confident they could prove culpability.

The RCMP said initially that the data recorders from the truck and bus were recovered intact and were shipped to California for analysis, with analysis to take a couple months, so I'm guessing they got the data back and that's why they laid charges.

Is that a watered down version of the old adage that they arrested you so you must be guilty?
They lay charges if there's a reasonable likelihood of conviction.

And keep in mind vehicular homicide is manslaughter not murder. No premeditated intent or intent formed at the moment to cause death to anyone.
If he's found guilty he'll get sentenced.
