Hope to Chiliwack is still the annoying part for me. There's been an increase in traffic in recent years but not an increase in road capacity. And throw in the crazy Chiliwack drivers...

At least after 232nd there's more lanes now to handle all the cars and the BC gov't wants to extend the extra lanes all the way to 264th which is a good idea.


Another extremely valid excuse to use Hwy #7 west of Hope.....

I took the route home a couple summers ago, just to check out 120 legal limit, it was s sunny summer day. 120's a little quick for a Wrangler on some of those curves.
It's pretty steep too, and because you have to cut back to Hwy97 and Cache Creek it sure took a lot of extra gas.
Haven't taken the route when snowy, but if you go 120 in the pissing rain on it you deserve what you get.

Bart - the railway abandoned it cuz the traffic didn't warrant the snow clearing and maintenance costs. It's still the same Pass subject to same fast weather changes.

The core portion of the Kettle Valley Railroad started in Hope, transited through Brookmere, Tulameen, Princeton, Summerland, Penticton, Beaverdell and terminated in Midway. An additional branch line connected to Spences Bridge, and Merritt. This portion was eventually adopted as the main portion of the railroad when the portion of the original railroad between Hope and Brookmere via the Coquihalla Valley was abandoned due to high track maintenance costs. Additional spur lines connected Copper Mountain with Princeton, Osoyoos, and Oliver with Penticton. In addition, the Columbia & Western Railway from Midway, through Grand Forks continuing though to Cranbrook was also periodically referred to as portions of the KVR as well.

I have always hated that stretch from Chilliwack back into town. Actually, I found over the years that once you hit Hope coming westbound it gets crappy. It's been awhile since I've been on that stretch but I remember there being times when traffic was bumper-to-bumper and you get those assholes who will pass on the freaking shoulder to get to the next exit quicker.

OTOH there is the relief you feel when getting "beyond Hope" going eastward.


Which is why I, more often than not, will take Hwy #7 from Hope to Coquitlam, just rejoining Hwy #1 west of the Pt Mann bridge, or staying on the Lougheed Hwy into town.


The upper levels are a major pain in the ass to. But having to pay a toll just to almost be killed by a bunch of maniacs driving like they're possessed is the biggest reason I quit taking the Horseshoe Bay route and take the truck route from Duke Pt to Twwassen and then down 10 to the #1 it's further and takes longer but it's alot less stressful than going the #1 all the way out and having to fight traffic all the way.

The Upper Levels highway is a lot more user friendly now they've done away with the traffic lights, hated that, just get to cruising speed only to hit another red light. Of course, before they straightened it and added a couple more lanes it was really a work of art, this was before they even had the road paved beyond Britannia Beach.....
