Incredible moment nuclear-powered icebreaker smashes through ice just yards from Arctic expedition's trucks

Explorers were travelling in trucks across stretches of northwestern Russia
The group encountered a massive icebreaker 'Taymyr' just meters from them
'Taymyr' built during the Cold War is one of the largest of its kind in the world

BartSimpson BartSimpson:
Here's a picture of the really awesome Canadian icebreaker that'll never get built:

Image

The first one is almost ready to launch, the second one is half built and they just laid the keep on the third one.

http://shipsforcanada.ca/our-progress

They have a brand new, shiny, next generation helicopter to go with it,

Good thing it floats over the ice, as your pic shows, because with Polar Class5,
it won't be cutting through it much.

I believe the proper term is 'slushbreaker'.

I'm sure the Russians will be glad to break the ice for us. Maybe we could give them a bit of our Northern territory in return.

They may or may not break ice for you but they have every intention of helping themselves to whatever part of the northern territory that interests them.

That was an NDP thing like calling the EH-101s "attack helicopters" but you're certainly entitled to follow them, I suppose.

Anyway, there is less and less ice up there every year and the Arctic archipelago is becoming "patrolable" for the first time, anyway.

The Russians have been 'patrolable' for 30 years now.

Maybe their ice is thinner due to the vodka content.

The Russians are incompetent in so many other ways that I can't say I lie awake at night wondering when they're going to annex Ellesmere Island. The average Russian is worth about a tenth of what the average Canadian can muster and building collosal icebreakers that can plow over the rapidly thinning pole is a collosal waste of their resources. Soviet habits never went away.

You are do easily dazzled.

I
No they’ve been called slush breakers by a lot of people involved but it’s a red herring because the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship project and the Polar Class Icebreaker project are two different projects. The later is a civilian Polar Class 2 vessel meant to break through multi year artic sea ice for various purposes. The former is primarily a naval patrol ship. It has some limited additional ice capability but is not meant to be an “icebreaker” in the arctic. On an arctic patrol I imagine its intended that the AOPS would be escorted by a PCI.

Oh, I get it!
That is the take home message!

martin14 martin14:
Do not read the entire article!
$1:
The Russian fleet of icebreakers is currently at around 40 but still continues to increase.

In comparison the US has just one fully operational icebreaker and another which is half operational.

With energy reserves and emerging trade routes becoming strategic prizes for itself experts have claimed that Russia is working on securing the arctic for itself.
