Zipperfish Zipperfish:
He was an enormous talent, capable of operating I several genres--soul, funk, rock n roll. I remember "Tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999" in 1984! Really turned my head on that smoking solo on Let's Go Crazy, and realized the breadth of his talent with Purple Rain. Very much a pop artist all the way but with whispers of deeper meaning.

True that. And behind all the artiface, the dude could shred.

Looks like it was drug addiction, most likely heroin.

martin14 martin14:
Pretty much stopped listening to him after the name change/weird symbol stuff.

He changed his name to get out of the very restrictive contract that he was in with the music publisher. He wanted control of his own music back, so by changing his name to a symbol the contracts were effectively broken.

It's said that he has enough music that he recorded at his home studio to publish a full album every year till 2100. 8O

Some songs he wrote, that he gave to others to record. Some won awards:

Revealed: Secret vault at Prince's home contains 'two thousand' unreleased tracks - enough music to release an album a year for the next century

Will We Ever Hear The Music In Prince's Vault?

http://news.sky.com/story/1683495/will-we-ever-hear-the-music-in-princes-vault

______________

Prince has already left a catalogue so there's no reason to release something he wasn't ready for the World to hear.

Lemmy Lemmy:
Ditto. Sad that he passed, but a "legend"? Mmmm, no. Good guitar player? Talented showman? Sure, but a couple of minor pop hits 30 years ago does not a legend make.

If writing hit songs for other artists, releasing a couple dozen albums and selling 100+ MILLION records, winning 7 Grammys and an Oscar, and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility doesn't make him a legend, then there haven't been any music legends ever.

While I only like a handful of his songs, given his prolific singing and songwriting history, I'd rank Prince up there with the likes of Lennon, Bowie and all the rest.
