I don't see what the big deal is. The US has always been friendly to all kinds of opressive regimes.

China and Vietnam are also oppressive communist regimes and the governments in power collectively killed tens of thousands of US servicemen in direct combat and each delivered some of America's most humiliating military losses. Yet the US enjoys bilateral trade with both of those regimes.

So what's the big deal about Cuba?

Simple no warning time.

Neither China nor Vietnam tried to place ballistic Missile's 90 miles from the US Mainland.

What set off the problem with the US & Cuba was when the Castro regime nationalized a huge list of American-owned businesses and assets in Cuba and did so without any compensation to the business owners.

The US then placed the trade embargo on Cuba so that the Castro regime did not profit from stealing those enterprises and then using them to sell products to the USA.

Settling those accounts will need to happen before the trade embargo can be lifted as many of those individuals and firms still have Cuban assets on their books and they have NOT been allowed to write them off by the IRS.
