The guy could have parked his truck in one of the multiple Park-And-Rides at the airport for the reasonable price of a couple hundred per month. That's actually not much more than two taxi trips both to and from the airport depending on where he was picked up and then taken back to. I did it myself a few times when I was doing the in-and-out from Ft. McMurray. P-n-R rules compared to taking cabs.

Hard situation but those resident-tagged streets are well signed with tagged-vehicles-only permitted. Those were brought in for a valid reason, like residents not being able to park on their own street and having their driveways blocked off by commuters or walkers parking in residential areas instead of taking the bus or buying their own parking pass at work. If it weren't for tags we'd still have situation with morons leaving their RV's out on the street all year long, which used to be a major and chronic problem in this city.

The problem with this one is how fast the city put the vehicle up for auction. That length of time should be doubled. There's no rush to sell off an unclaimed vehicle after only a couple of weeks.

It's a space issue.

If we request a longer storage time, they will require larger lots to store on.

I am not up to snuff on Calgary's numbers, but Edmonton sees about 1,650 vehicles impounded per month. You would have to double the impound lot size (which always appears to be past actual capacity), or change the frequency of auctions...both of which would be fairly pricey, to provide a longer storage time.

Someone didn't want to help him one way or another. I'm sure they earned their wings by doing this to the guy.

When you find who bought the truck, and how he is connected to the towing dept., you will
have your answer.

Didn't happen in a vacuum.

Been following this story on facebook. A truck that is almost identical to this one and very recently acquired by an as of yet unnamed individual, is now for sale for $95 000.

Looks to me like Edmonton is using this policy mostly to generate revenue.

Probably true, because we also changed all our school zones to playground zones that are in effect until 9 PM. This was nothing but a blatant revenue grab because it opens up hundreds of former school zones as revenue creating areas. There's no kids in the playground zones after school in the middle of winter but the city didn't care about that. They claim it's for the "safety of the children" but in other zones that are blatantly used as places to speed through you'd also never see a cop in them to pull any of the pricks over. This kind of thing is nothing but a grotesque cash-grab and should be an election issue but it'll survive regardless thanks to the massive disinterest in civic politics by the inhabitants of this city.

We can bitch all we want. The onus remains on the individual to be aware of the local ordnance. That truck was parked on a tagged street with multiple signs that said "residents parking only". Even more homeowners on those kind of streets are also given parking pass placards for visitors to hang from their rearview mirrors that gives them permission to park on those kind of streets. The law is a major bummer but it's not in the wrong here. There's at least two individuals who ignored or were ignorant of the law and it's a damn shame that their mistakes led to an impounding turning into such an extreme example.

This bullshit you listed is all contributing to why Canada is not a friendly place to do business.

You're better off moving to Nevada, Idaho, Montana, etc.

We were a great place to do business until the Arabs nuked our economy. And I'd rather put up with the piddling little laws and inconveniences than put up with situation like you have in the US with indifferent businessmen doing things like destroying the Gulf of Mexico with a single drilling-platform disaster or poisoning a hundred thousand people in Flint Michigan because some austerity-junkie thought that having them drink toxic water was a great way to save money. Better that some make a few less dollars than everyone suffering from totally preventable disasters brought on by a thoroughly wretched let's-do-this-on-the-cheap mentality.

It's cute how many of you are ignoring that the truck sat, unclaimed, for 21 days.

Friend couldn't make a phone call to the owner?

Dad couldn't make a phone call to the owner?

This is a "woe is me/full of shit" story published to make the city look bad in spite of the citizen's indiscretions.

I guess personal responsibility is only a tag line to be bandied about when it suits.

I have mixed emotions about this story. The city has a job to do, I get it. When I lived in Boston it was a pain in the ass as one side of the street was alway closed to parking in the winter for the plows to do their job. It really sucked playing musical chairs with your car every day, and constantly fighting over parking spaces. I remember having to park several blocks from my home in a business that was open 24 hours like a grocery store. It sucked. I would never want to live that way again. My problem with this story is what is the rush to dispose of this vehicle? I mean this was not a rusted out 72 Pinto that was abandoned on purpose. This was a very expensive vehicle. It would be common sense that some one did not just walk away from this vehicle. What if this vehicle was stolen? Is this all the effort the city would make to find the rightful owner? So if I have a car that I don't want to make the payments on anymore, I can just park it on a street in Calgary and I'm in the clear? Good to know.

I think it should take some more time to permanatly seperate someone from their property. When the government wants my stuff, they move quick. When I need the governments assistance to get rid of something, they drag their feet. It took me years to get rid of my wife. But seriously, when the government owes YOU something, it takes months, or even years to get it. When they want your shit, they pull out all the stops. Hardly seems fair to me.
