Lemmy Lemmy: "Shitty" if it's applied to the abused children identified in the OP? Sure, guilty. That was not my intention. But for the many who end up basic training because they are otherwise unemployable? Most people are unemployable at that age, at least for jobs that are worth anything. I'm not going to get up on a high horse and diss people who join up, not when they come from places where there's a thousand job-application competition to pump gasoline or bag groceries or work in the food court at the shopping mall. Whatever their background is, and even if they join up just for the job, they've still got more guts than a couple of old farts like you and I ever had.

Lemmy Lemmy: We don't want these types to be nice. We want them to be gung-ho and angry. That's why we keep them mostly caged until their deployment is necessary. Francis Quarles Francis Quarles: God and the soldier, all men adore In time of danger and not before When the danger is passed and all things righted, God is forgotten and the soldier slighted.

Seems Lemmy feels those in the Military are scum that needs to kept away from society and only joined because they are unemployable. In his view no one joins the military out of patriotism, job training, or to gain the benefits earned such as help in paying for collage. They are just unemployable thugs who would be on the street homeless or in a gang if they were not in the military.

Never said nor implied any of that, but don't let me get in the way of that strawman you're stuffing.

Then why type this $1: We need a place to keep these types. Sort of employed, but not really, housed together on the margins of society, out of most peoples' way,
and this $1: We want them to be gung-ho and angry. That's why we keep them mostly caged until their deployment is necessary.
But oh you didn't mean it?

I typed what I typed to express some of the tremendous value that the military provides for society. I didn't call anyone scum nor say anything about peoples' motivations for joining, be it patriotism, earning college money nor anything else. I never said anything about homelessness, gangs nor any of the other negative sentiments you wrongly attributed to me. But the quickness of your and others' anger and desire to lash out at a perceived slight, emphasizes my point.

If I'd said "barracksed" or "housed on base" instead, would that have hurt your feelings less?
What does AWOL mean, btw?

What does AWOL mean, btw? AWOL means absent with out leave, in other words the solider did not show up for duty. Outside of duty hours a solider unless being punished is not confined to the barracks or post. They can leave the base and do so. You wish them to be kept away from the society they protect. You don't show up for work you get fired. A solider does not show up for work he/she gets punished. Yet the military will try and retain the solider do to the money and time put into their training. soldiers are not restricted to staying on post or base unless in an area considered hostile.

A side note not all military personnel live on base many live off base and commute to work each day when not deployed.

Lemmy Lemmy: BartSimpson BartSimpson: Lemmy Lemmy: We need to keep them somewhere because we only have one arena in town so we can't employ them all as rink-rats. Remember this the next time you mistakenly expect me to be nice to you. We don't want these types to be nice. We want them to be gung-ho and angry. That's why we keep them mostly caged until their deployment is necessary. Thanks for confirming you don't have a clue about the military or the people in it.

In another post, we had a second hand quote from a soldier who joined the military because that's the only job he could get, but complained that he was risking his life protecting all the "hippies" that voted for Pierre Trudeau. (ie the majority/plurality of voters.) He wanted ever lasting gratitude from the Canadian public for enlisting. So we have a person who joins for selfish reasons (ie he wanted a better job), despises the majority of Canadians, yet wants gratitude from Canada for showing up for his job as a mechanic. If I recall correctly, this sentiment was cheered on by the local CKA military types. Also, we had reports of soldiers cheering on our involvement in Astan because it would advance their careers.
So, this antagonism seems to go both ways. Soldiers who see the military as a make work program but want to be seen as heroes for joining up. Sneering at the majority of Canadians, because they know better. Seems like a two way mirror.
But too bad that the focus of the op has been totally lost here.

andyt andyt: But too bad that the focus of the op has been totally lost here. Bullshit. You set this whole thread up as bait for yet another hate on for the military. You should congratulate yourself for being an especially large asshole today.
