Chickpeas are the reason why poor people would rather go to McDonalds all the time. At least the malnutrition you get there tastes kind of OK.

andyt andyt: desertdude desertdude: Just give me some Khuboos ( Kinda like Pita bread, only more fluffy and soft ) and hummus and I can live for months just on that !
Yep. Same with roti and dahl. Unfortunately while I can make a decent hummus (heavy on the garlic) the best efforts of my Punjabi friends to teach my how to make a good dahl have been in vain. That's because the recipe changes every time they tell it and there's no sense of measuring the ingredients. Maybe I should look up a good recipe on line. I did just make a good lentil soup tho, with garlic sausage. I can cook quite some complicated dishes but dahl of any kind also escapes me! I know the various ways to make it but when I try it never comes out right. Although with cooking I never measure ingredients, and put it what feels right and 95% of the times it comes out right and rest of the 5% of the times its never bad enough that it has to go to the bin

Wow, on several levels. This persons generosity is amazing. And Dr. C and DD seem to have some good food there. I like chick peas but really like lentils better. I usually just take a marrow bone and slow cooker it for 12 hrs and then put in the lentils. Near the end, garlic and sometimes veg go in. Really nice.

We also do a chick pea soup. Four ham hocks, chick peas, carrots, onion, split green peas, simmer until hocks are tender. After hocks are tender remove from pan, strip off the meat and put back with the bones into soup. Eat some, then split up the rest into meal size portions and freeze. Yummy.

I used to smoke ham hocks just for pea soup. I've got menus planned for like the next 6 weeks trying all this stuff! Haven't made a good lentil soup for some time, thanks for the suggestion Fife! I think I have some red lentils . . .

Cardboard cooked with ham hocks would taste good.

DrCaleb DrCaleb: One of the vendors at the Farmers Market is called " The Happy Camel" and it's hummus is famous! I always get it, some baba gnoush, Labaneh and lots of their hand made pitas. Now I'm hungry too! You brought to mind roast camel! NOW we're talking tasty!!! There was a fellow in the sandbox who didn't use the traditional whole-camel technique (which ends up kind of chewy). He'd cut it up and brine the cuts and then roast them with a baste made of local mustard, salt, and vinegar. Lord love a duck, that was on par with the best Carolina BBQ I've ever had! ![Drool [drool]](./images/smilies/droolies.GIF)

However, anyone who would waste a good pork ham hock on McDonald's needs to be shot!

I've never been a fan of chickpeas myself, but as my Dad used to say, beggars can't be choosers! Kudos to the couple for helping so many.
